How to: Make the Ultimate Martini at Home

You don't find too many recipes that begin with, "First a note about substituting ingredients or tools. Don't. This method has been exhaustively tested and retested for excellence and the smallest variation can result in catastrophic and unintended consequences."

Somehow, that deserves to be respected, and when the blog post is entitled "Perfect" withoutany reference to what's actually inside (the word "martini" doesn't appear in the first four paragraphs)...well, then, this is clearly something to take very, very seriously. 

This is certainly the most specific recipe I've ever seen for a cocktail, but not the most complicated. When I run out of vermouth, I'll be restocking with this guy in mind. I'll let you know how it goes.

Also, a "vodka martini" is called a Kangaroo.  Which is silly and also perfect, because nobody should ever order one.  "You know what this martini has too much of?  Taste!"

The only reason a self-respecting imbider should buy vodka is to create homemade tinctures and bitters.  

Nope. I've got a problem with this. This is a recipe for a 'Vodka Martini', which is a delicious drink, and much as I appreciate his attention to detail, he overlooks the fact that there is no such thing as a 'Gin Martini'. A 'Martini' is made with gin. Period. There's a strong argument for substituting vodka, but that makes it a <I>vodka</I> martini. Some people substitute other liquors, but that makes it an abomination.

I appreciate the work of a purist, but if he can't recognise the name of the drink he's making, he loses the final 'perfect' point.
