You Aren’t Cleaning The Grossest Part Of Your Bedroom

I always thought the most important part of keeping my bedroom clean was making the bed and putting my clothes away. But even when the floor is completely clear and the sheets are fresh there are some really surprising spots collecting grime. It is so easy to overlook some of these spots because we become blind to the things that we see every day. Let us talk about those unexpected areas and how to quickly freshen them up.

Your Laundry Hamper

We constantly throw our sweatiest gym clothes and dirty socks right into the hamper. But when was the last time you actually cleaned the basket itself? Fabric and canvas hampers absorb all those funky odors and bacteria from our clothes over time. They essentially become a breeding ground for stale smells and bacteria. If your hamper has a removable liner just toss it in the wash. If not, take it outside and spray it with a fabric sanitizer.

Think about where your phone goes all day. It sits on public counters and café tables before making its way right to your nightstand. We grab that charging cord every single night before bed transferring all those germs directly onto the rubber cable. Over months that little white cord turns dingy and harbors a ton of invisible bacteria. Just take a simple antibacterial wipe and run it down the length of the cord once a week. It helps stop the spread of germs.

The Hidden Wall Behind The Headboard

We almost never move our heavy beds to clean behind them. The tiny gap between your headboard and the wall is a massive trap for dust webs and dead skin cells. Every time you shift in your sleep, you are breathing in the particles trapped in that narrow space. Carefully pull your bed forward just a few inches next time you vacuum. Run the hose attachment down the wall and baseboard to clear away any trapped dust.

We occasionally dust the base of our lamps but we completely ignore the inside of the shade. The heat from the lightbulb actually bakes airborne dust directly onto the inner fabric or plastic. It’s gross, but when you turn the light on to read at night you are literally warming up stale dust right next to your face. Grab a sticky lint roller and gently roll it around the inside of the fabric shade to lift that hidden grime away. You’ll breathe much easier.

Hanging family photos and beautiful art makes a bedroom feel so cozy and personal. However, the flat top edge of every single frame acts like a tiny shelf just waiting to collect floating dust. Because they sit above our natural eye level we never notice how thick the dust layer can get. Taking a dry microfiber cloth and swiping the top of your frames and mirrors will instantly stop that dust from raining down onto your furniture.

Having a little bit of nature in the bedroom is a wonderful way to improve your mood and the air quality. But those broad green leaves are basically giant dust catchers. When plants get covered in dust they cannot absorb sunlight properly and they stop filtering the air as well. Every few weeks, take a damp paper towel and gently wipe down each leaf. It keeps your plants much healthier and removes a huge source of hidden bedroom allergens.

We all love a bed covered in beautiful throw pillows. They tie the whole room together so nicely. But we usually just toss them onto the floor or a nearby chair every night before sleeping. They pick up dirt from the floor and get washed way less than our regular pillowcases do. Check the care tags on your decorative pillows. Even if they can’t go in the washing machine, you can usually throw them in a warm dryer for ten minutes to sanitize and fluff them.
