Ungrateful People Who Can Make The World Regret Helping Them
For the most part, the favors we do for people are as appreciated as when others do them for us. We can find ourselves in seriously tight spots and we'll remember when people were kind to us during these vulnerable moments forever.
However, some people show through their behavior that they aren't like that. Some people make it so obvious that they feel entitled to our help and see nothing wrong with being ungrateful and selfish. Naturally, such people are infuriating to deal with, so it's only right that the folks unfortunate enough to do so would vent their frustrations.
Does She Enjoy Her Misery?
As one person explained, their mother uses a big plastic cup to drink her tea. This is a problem because when the tea is freshly made, the cup cannot accommodate how scalding hot it is and becomes too hot to hold. That means it's only bearable when the tea's gone cold (which obviously isn't ideal), it spills easily, and it makes the tea taste like burning plastic.
Sensing this predicament, the person got their mother a ceramic Starbucks travel mug. Since it's designed to keep tea safely hot, was sturdy, didn't spill, and let the tea taste like tea, they figured their mother would love it. However, the crushed to see their mother's dismissive reaction when she opened her gift. All she did was scoff, roll her eyes, and say, "Why is everyone obsessed with Starbucks? It's too expensive." With that, she threw the cup aside and didn't pay it a second thought. In their words, "You'd better believe I took that travel mug with me when I left for school. Ungrateful? You get nothing."
Somehow, That's Not The Last Gift She's Getting
When someone's little sister turned 19, she had a rough year. Since our protagonist also knew she had a passion for drawing, they decided to do something special for her. That turned out to be buying her a very expensive drawing tablet. So expensive, in fact, that they had to save up and make this a combination of Christmas and birthday presents.
However, our protagonist complete deflated when when her sister opened her gift and said, "This is way too small, I said the bigger one!" Worse yet, the older sibling sprung for the case for the tablet, which the sister said was ugly and threw it in the garbage. Since the sister treated the tablet like it was worthless and banged it around accordingly, the screen cracked within two weeks. It's now used as a drink tray. Incredibly, our protagonist still buys their sister gifts but has at least learned not to spend anywhere that much money on her ever again.
A Hard Lesson She Still Didn't Learn
Since the protagonist's niece was heading off to college for the first time, they decided to give her a laptop for her birthday. Since they're also a student, this wasn't easy to afford. So when they found a used Toshiba Satellite, they sold their PSP and some other items to pool the money together to get it. When the niecewas opening her presents at the dinner table, she came to the laptop and said, "This is it? I thought you'd buy me a brand new one." To this, the protagonist told her that she knew full well they couldn't afford it and that this was the best they could do. In the resulting tantrum, the niece yelled, "I want a brand new one, not this. This sucks! Worst present ever!" before pushing it across the table so it fell to the floor.
Naturally, this led the protagonist to pick it up and walk out. Although their cousin tried to stop them, all they had to say was "I'll never give her anything again." Apparently, this incident embarrassed the niece's parents enough that she was told she'd have to buy everything herself and would receive no gifts or hand-outs. However, this led her to call back and ask for the laptop anyway. However, the spurned relative would soon be without it anyway, as they sold it to a friend who helped them pick it out, making about $10 as a result. Somehow, this still didn't deter the niece from asking for it again, saying she needed it for college. Apparently, her brother had given her the impression that her relative would fold and give it to her. As they put it, "No apology yet, only demands." Obviously, they didn't see any reason not to hold firm on their promise to never buy her anything again.
That's As Cold As It Gets
One guy recalled a chaotic episode he'll never forget that started with him and a friend hanging out at a pub in the Georgetown part of Washington D.C. After eating and drinking to their heart's content, the friend decided to go buy some darts. Since the guy apparently didn't feel like playing, he stayed at their table. Soon after, he felt what turned out to be someone's iPhone underfoot. Although both men waited for someone to come looking for it, nobody arrived. Thus, he took it with the intention of finding the owner the next morning. However, it didn't take that long, as the phone's owner ended up texting him at about 2:30 am.
This woman wanted him to bring it to her, but since he wasn't anywhere near the bar and losing the fight against sleep, he gave her his number and got her to agree to meet him in the morning. He typically wakes up at around 6:30 am, which was handy since that's precisely when the woman called him again. They arrange to meet near his bus stop, but he characterizes her end of their conversations as rude and demanding for the entire duration. He also said she was late, which made him miss his bus. Nonetheless, she eventually pulled up in an Uber and he flagged her down by waving her phone. Yet, when she approached, all she did was snatch it out of his hands and slam the door without another word. As he put it, "I was speechless. Seriously, who does that?"
Honesty Apparently Wasn't The Best Policy Here
One pizza delivery person recalled making a stop at a low-income apartment complex and bringing a customer a pizza that cost $18. At first, everything seemed normal. The woman gave the driver a $20 bill and told them to keep the change. Yet, when the driver returned to their car and put the bill in with the other cash they had, they realized the woman had made a mistake. And it was a big enough one that their eyes widened with shock.
As the explained, they turned back around at once before knocking on her door, extending their hand with a $100 bill in it and said, "I don't think you meant to include this inside the twenty." For some unknown reason, she started screaming at the driver that she hadn't given a $100 tip (apparently unaware that they were in agreement on this) and yelling that they were lucky she didn't call the police. Apparently, this was followed by her slamming the door and calling the pizza place to complain. Since neither the driver nor their manager could figure out what her problem was, she was put on the do-not-answer list.
Even His Family Was Embarrassed At Him
Years ago, someone recalled that they were driving across the country in a moving truck filled with all of their mom's belongings with a friend by their side. On the second-last day of this excursion, they had been driving for 18 hours, which meant they needed a rest stop to use the bathroom and stretch their legs. While there, they saw a family of four looking dejected in a car, which signalled to our protagonist that something was wrong with their vehicle. Sure enough, the father told them they had run out of gas and needed to get to the next town, which was 40 miles away. This person felt they had to do something about the family's predicament.
So, they and their friend drove all the way to the town in question and bought some gas and a can to bring it back to the family in. Since this trip took an hour and a half on top of the additional 18 hours they were guiding this massive moving truck, they were exhausted by the time they got back to the rest stop. Still, they hopped out of the truck and gave the can to the father, only for him to say, "I would rather have the money." At first, that didn't make any sense because that wasn't what he claimed to need, but our protagonist was disturbed to realize that he never wanted gas to begin with but was ineptly manipulating this person into giving him money. Although the man seemed unrepentant about wasting the person's time and money, they could see that the mother had an apologetic, embarrassed facial expression. In the end, they just set the can down, got in the truck, and felt like "a giant idiot."
The Most Devastating Heartbreak
One guy was emphatic that he would never forget Valentine's Day 2004, despite never caring much about the holiday before. However, since his girlfriend at the time had never been in a serious relationship before and wanted a truly special Valentine's Day, he decided to go all out. In a move he would later come to regret, he went to his former workplace and bought two dozen red roses. Since he still had his old uniform, he also swiped an unused delivery notice to make himself look like one of the company's delivery people. He also spent his entire paycheck on gifts for her, as well as decorations for her house and food to make her a special dinner. Those gifts weren't cheap either, as a then-new iPod and camera were among them.
He also laid some of the rose petals on her bed, as he anticipated she'd be very impressed with his efforts. Then, he set his pièce de résistance into motion: He arrived at her class in his disguise and gave her the roses and a teddy bear in front of everyone, even having her sign the invoice. Since it was her last class of the day, he knew she'd be heading home and raced to beat her there to start cooking dinner. When she walked in, she was upset and wondered why he hadn't waited for her after class, to which he revealed his plan. When she asked if they could go out to dinner, he told her he had already started cooking. Yet, when she looked at everything he had done for her, she sighed in disappointment and said, "I really wanted this to be a special Valentine's day. Just this once. I was really hoping we could have a special day together but I guess not." He never went to that effort again.
Someone Else Set This Person Up For An Ordeal
While one former Blockbuster employee was working their shift as the night manager while in high school, they were staffing the store alone when a customer handed them a woman's wallet and said he found it on the ground. When the employee looked up her account, they saw that she had been in the store about a half-hour earlier. Once they called her, she sounded happy and said she'd be right in. Since store policy required locking her wallet in the store's safe until she arrived, they did just that. When she showed up about an hour later, they told her it would take 15 minutes for the safe to open due to its time-lock mechanism. That wasn't good enough for her and after asking whether she could get it faster, she spent the whole time at the register in a foul mood while the employee helped other customers. Finally, the safe beeped and the employee was eager to hand it over so she could leave.
However, this was only the beginning of their saga because she said, "My money better be in here," to which the employee replied that they had no idea as they only opened the outer flap to see her Blockbuster card and ID. However, while they were helping the next customer, she suddenly screamed, "My money is gone, you took my money!" After the employee reiterated that they only opened the necessary flap, she said there was supposed to be about $200 in there and threatened to call the police. The employee told her she was welcome to do that and continued to help customers as she called, making snide comments about her to the employee, who simply shrugged and smiled. Although the woman appeared smug when she told the employee she had called, they remained unfazed even as she hovered by their register and pointed and waved when an officer arrived. However, he didn't take her any more seriously than the employee did and even let his eyes wander to the football game on the store's DirectTV kiosk before asking the employee if they took the money. Since they said no, the officer said there was nothing he could do and escorted the woman out of the store while the employee smiled like the Cheshire Cat after dealing with her for two hours.
She Didn't Know How Good She Had It
A friend of the protagonist's mother arranged for a big birthday celebration for his daughter and since their family was rich, it was quite an extravagant affair with the presents to match. In addition to some dolls and other toys, she received a large, elaborate dollhouse and a horse with all the needed gear and riding lessons. As far as anyone was concerned, it was everything a little girl could want. However, all she did was throw a screaming tantrum about the fact that it was apparently the wrong dollhouse.
This would be enough to incense any parent, but it was especially abhorrent to her father, as he was a refugee from an unspecified African nation who mourned the deaths of most of his friends and family in his homeland. After competing in the Olympics, he worked hard to become a doctor and (at least partially) provide the life his daughter had and didn't appreciate. This meant he cancelled the party outright and took all of her gifts (including the horse) back where he got them. Although the girl's friends could still enjoy their cake and keep their party favors, she was grounded indefinitely.
A Walking Disaster
From the way our narrator tells it, their mother had purchased a wide assortment of expensive phones, laptops, and cameras over the years on the condition that she care for them. However, that never happened and these items invariably broke within two months. Nonetheless, the mother bought her a $900 digital SLR that the narrator had wanted for years because she said she was going to take a photography class at school. Instead, she complained that she didn't receive any other presents, used it for a day, and then did nothing with it for six months. Although she did eventually use it for her blog, she admitted there was no photography class before complaining she could only use it on automatic. Despite the obvious resentment about this, the narrator still wanted to do something nice for her at Easter, remembering that the sister complained about not getting gift baskets on that occasion since she had turned 15. So, her sibling spent a couple of hundred dollars on merchandise related to The Hunger Games series.
If the sibling thought she'd appreciate this gesture, however, they were wrong. Instead, she complained that nobody was hiding Easter eggs with money inside of them for her like her friends experienced. That convinced the narrator never to buy her anything again, which came to a head when they bought their mother a Macbook Air to show their appreciation for her. As they described their sister's reaction, "She clawed at my mom's face and tried to take her car because it apparently wasn't fair that my mom got something nice for the first time EVER." The sister later broke her laptop (which the sibling suspects was intentional despite her claims to the contrary) and apparently expected her sibling to replace it. Obviously, that didn't happen.
At Least Someone Had Some Sense
In a situation they still can't make sense of, our protagonist saw a man in line in front of them withdraw $400 from an ATM. Somehow, he walked away without taking the cash and this stunned our protagonist so much that they didn't process what happened until he was out the door. They grabbed the money and chased him to the parking lot, but when they handed it over to him. they immediately regretted having anything to do with him. Inexplicably, he grabbed their arm, started insulting them, and accused them of trying to take his money.
Fortunately, this man had a friend with him who didn't understand his actions any more than the protagonist did. While it's bewildering that he had to explain this, the friend walked the man through the reality that the protagonist was obviously giving back the money had had lost. The friend emphasized his point by asking the man "What the heck is wrong with you?" and thanked our protagonist when the man wouldn't.
She Played Herself In A Big Way
As our narrator tells it, their husband had a an E-Class Mercedes Benz from 1995 and wanted to give it to his youngest cousin, knowing her family couldn't afford such a gift for her. However, she apparently decided that since he was likely going to buy a new Benz, she felt he should buy her a new one instead of this older model, too. The couple was in disbelief at her entitlement, which prompted the husband to immediately take the keys away from her and give it to her older brother. He had a Honda he bought himself that was falling apart, so he was far more appreciative.
To further spite his little sister, the couple also offered to pay for not only his insurance, but also his first year of college. Meanwhile, they haven't gotten the husband's younger cousin anything for the past three years and that includes even the simplest birthday cards. As the narrator put it, "If you act like that when someone gives you something, you clearly aren't worthy of anything."
A Simple Sentence That Devastated His Parents
As one parent described, their son was very excited by trains when he was little. And while he had a wooden train set with a lot of features that he had hours of fun with, he wanted an electric set to the point of constant begging. The parent's reply was "Not until you're a little bigger." That Christmas, "a little bigger" finally came and his parent had a surprise for him. Specifically, it was a small electric train set on a four-by-eight piece of plywood. Although the parent was working on a budget, they included an oval with a split-off that went over the main track, a couple of engines, some cars, some trees for decoration, and a crossing with lights.
Although they described it as "not much," they nonetheless spent hours working on it after the kids went to bed each night. However, they would eventually confess that they regretted every second of it. Sure enough, when all the other gifts were unwrapped on Christmas, they told their son that there was one more surprise waiting for him. When he saw the train, his eyes lit up and he was immediately excited. After the parent showed him how to use it, they went back upstairs with the intention of playing with it with him when they came back down. When they did, however, they were greeted by the sight of their son walking back upstairs. He looked them in the eye and said, "It's kind of boring." They described his words as shooting them straight through the heart and making them cry.
A Lesson Taught And Gratitude Rewarded In One Fell Swoop
When our narrator was working at a used car dealership, they were selling the cheapest car available to a father and his daughter. It was a 2000 Daewoo that cost about $3,000, but the daughter wasn't concerned about what her dad could afford because she was ecstatic to have her own car, regardless of the make. Meanwhile, a coworker was in the process of selling a much newer Ford Explorer to another dad-daughter duo.
When the latter daughter saw her Explorer, however, she started yelling "I didn't want an Explorer, I wanted an Expedition!" With that, her father walked into the dealership's finance office and changed the deal he was planning to make. However, instead of caving to his daughter's demands, he talked to the father buying the Daewoo and they agreed to switch the names on the respective titles. That meant the girl whining about the Explorer was now stuck with the Daewoo and the girl grateful to have anything got to go home in a fully loaded Explorer.
This Much Audacity Can't Go Unchallenged
When our protagonist was in college, a guy he barely knew asked him to help him move. He understood why, as he had a strong build and could move furniture. Although he agreed, it was quickly clear to him how unfairly divided the labor would be. The guy brought two friends, but our protagonist described them as carrying the weight equivalent of a pack of gum up and down the stairs on each trip. Meanwhile, he was left to take the bed apart and move it himself. Worse yet, the acquaintance's mom told him to hurry up because she only had the moving truck for three hours.
As he told it, that brought him so close to walking out on the spot. What he did do was tell her she was welcome to do that job herself if she wanted, which she was smart enough to take the hint about and clam up. Once he helped these people move and put the bed together in the new place, he started packing up his tools only for the guy to say, "Oh can you leave your tools here? I have a couple of other things to build but my friends are coming over for dinner." As you might expect, he instead continued packing his gear and told him off while also informing him he had every intention of spreading this very story around campus. In his words, "I wanted everyone to know how much of an ungrateful little jerk he was."
A Person Owns Up To Their Childhood Regret
While most people who shared their stories aired their grievances about other people, one young man shared a regret he's carried since he and his twin brother's sixth birthday. As he described, his mom bought him a musical statue that works when it's wound up. Apparently, it consisted of a record player with little mice who would climb and dance on it as it played. Although it sounds adorable, it was hard for him not to feel like he was missing out when he saw his brother had received a remote-controlled Power Rangers Megazord toy.
He said that he asked why he didn't get a toy like his brother's and spoke at length about the fact that he couldn't play with the statue she had given him. However, the sad look on his mother's face as she burst into tears and apologized still makes him cry to this day. He also explained that while he was too young to understand why, he knew she was crying because of him. This led him to say he was sorry and try to convince her he liked his present, but she turned and told the twins to get ready to go to summer camp. As he explained, she had booked it to keep watch over them while she dealt with the fallout from her recent divorce with their father. In his words, "To this day, I have that statue on my shelf, and I'll keep it forever, to remind me that thoughtless words can sometimes do the most damage."
She Had Less To Complain About Than She Thought
When our narrator's coworker arrived at work after her birthday, she complained that her grandmother had bought her a silver necklace. If she was allergic to silver, she would have had a legitimate grievance, but this didn't appear to be the case. Instead, she said, "She knows I only ever wear white gold!"
Our narrator had to laugh at this, telling her than when their grandparents were still alive, all they ever got was a birthday card and even that stopped by the time they were in high school. Rather than take the hint, however, the coworker only became more defensive and tried to get them to sympathize with her. As they said, "This co-worker is actually a lovely person but she has lived a very sheltered life." She might have to start gaining some perspective on it fast, then, or she isn't likely to be regarded as lovely for long.
He Never Forgot What They Did
One year, a stepdad made two special Christmas stockings for his wife's two teenage children and that included specialty candies, toys he was sure they would like, and makeup where appropriate to their respective interests. Although he could not really afford the $200 he spent on them, he happily did so. At least, he was happy to do it until he saw their reactions. Both spent about two seconds looking at the stockings, agreed that they didn't meet their apparently high standards, and put them aside.
Worse yet, the boy of the two stepped on his and broke one of the toys. He didn't care that he did this and the stepdad still suspects he did it on purpose. Naturally, he wasn't terribly motivated to make Christmas nice for the kids after that. In his words, "They are adults now and I guess the fact that I still remember that scene points out how petty I am."
A Tough Situation That Almost Everyone Understood
As one young man explained, the last few years he was living at home were marked by tough financial times. Almost everyone in the family worked and contributed to paying for the family's mortgage and bills, which meant cutting costs anywhere they could. That said, he still described them as living a fairly comfortable lifestyle until the father shared some bad news that they were at risk of defaulting on the mortgage. This led the young man to push even harder, including contributing his entire paychecks for the cause. While his father wanted to provide the family with everything they wanted, the young man nonetheless urged him to get rid of a $300 cable and internet service.
This would result in the family having no cable and very slow internet service, but it would also bring a $300 bill down to a $20 one. However, his sister balked at this, outright screaming that they couldn't cancel the current package. She didn't let up now matter how much he tried to explain, but her protests didn't matter in the end. This was especially true because she not only didn't work at 20 years old when literally everyone else in her family did, but she did fewer chores in her life than one of her brothers did in a day. Ten years later, he said, she goes between welfare and living with her parents with no appreciation for anyone. As he summed it up, "A firm but fair father, a loving but firm mother, two hard-working sons who have paid for everything on their own, with no debt whatsoever…and then there's her."
Unreasonable And Belligerent Is A Terrible Combination
As one McDonald's employee recounted, one night saw them take orders and payments at the drive-thru on their own. When a woman came up to order two Big Macs, two large fries, and two cokes, that would normally come out to $21. However, once she placed her order, the employee entered them as two large meals, which meant her total was $16 instead. When the employee told her as much, she was suspicious and took a long time to meticulously look over the receipt. Once she realized what happened, she apparently went ballistic. She says she didn't want meals, but just the fries, burgers, and drinks individually. however, this didn't bother them and is fairly common for customers not to understand the difference, so the employee started explaining what they did. As they said, customers generally apologize and appreciate the fact that the employee saved them in this case) five dollars.
Yet while the employee explained that the woman paid less for the exact same items this way, that realization never came. Instead, she escalated her abuse, screaming "I come through and order this every week and it's always been the same, you presumptuous little jerk," and "How dare you think I'm such a moron that I don't know how to order my own food!" The employee explained they didn't think that at all (though at this point, it would be hard to blame them if they did) and that it was their job to give customers the best deal, apologizing that they were apparently the first to do this. Despite their best efforts and saint-like patience, however, the woman simply threw her change at them and drove off. The next woman in line had witnessed this, and saw that the employee was visibly shaking when she pulled up. Although they were sadly used to customers yelling at them, this experience was beyond anything anyone had done to them before. She consoled the employee and reassured them they were completely in the right, which compelled the employee to give her a free coke for her kindness. After the second woman left, the employee took a moment to cry in the change rooms.
A Real-Life Veruca Salt
An employee at a Porsche dealership recalled a 17-year-old girl coming in with her father, which already seemed strange to them. As they said, "17-year-olds should not be getting Porsches for their birthday. I don't care if they made the honor roll every year for their whole life." And that perception became more entrenched when they actually met this young lady, who wanted a $100,000 2012 Porsche Panamera 4S. The father was intimidated by that price, suggesting a used one instead. As he explained, that would cost between $85,000 and $90,000, yet wouldn't have many miles on it and would still be as certified by Porsche as a new model. Unfortunately, her response to this was, "Well, it's not my fault you don’t make enough money for our family."
She went even further, saying that if he didn't get her the new model, she wouldn't speak to him again. The employee was saddened to see the pain in the father's eyes when she said this, particularly because he took what she said about him not making enough money on board. It made them wish they were a customer, as they would be far less obligated to be polite to her. Nonetheless, the father acquiesced, albeit leasing the car she wanted without her knowledge. One might think this would improve her disposition, but she was jut as rude to both her father and salesman taking care of them during the test drive. One example consisted of her responding to him trying to show her the features with "I think I can figure it out okay, I'm not stupid" and told him to shut up when he asked her to stop going 100 miles per hour on the highway. Apparently, the father just sat there the whole time.
Imagine Being Out-Matured By A Baby
As one parent explained, their friend's four-year-old daughter had a Dora The Explorer birthday party in August. This meant that come Christmas time, this person felt pretty secure gifting her some relevant dolls and spent about $30 in the process. Unfortunately, the child's response was scream that Dora was for babies and that she was too old for her. This meant the child's mother took her home without her present, so our protagonist then gave the dolls to their own 18-month-old daughter. Although she loved them, the four-year-old threw the biggest tantrum the parent had ever seen when she saw the younger girl playing with them a few weeks later. In the end, she took the dolls back home with her, insisting they were hers first.
However, it's worth noting that this didn't go unchallenged. The parent tried to explain to the four-year-old that she hadn't wanted them but their own daughter did. Even the child's mother and older sister backed the parent up, saying that she was acting silly and didn't deserve the dolls. Naturally, this only made the tantrum worse. Instead, it was actually the 18-month-old who happily gave the dolls back, and her parent believes she was proud of herself for stopping the tantrum. Naturally, the sweet little girl got her own set of dolls that week.
She's Probably A Little Embarrassed Looking Back
When our narrator moved out for college, their parents bought them a computer. This was a big deal, as the family didn't have much money at the time and had only recently paid off a loan. Nonetheless, they needed it to study and it was a fitting going away present. All of that context was either lost on their younger sister or not appreciated by her, as she felt the need to outdo her older sibling in terms of what they owned. This meant she threw a serious tantrum, which was partially influenced by the fact that her parents wouldn't let her go on an overseas trip. As soon as the older sibling said anything, she screamed at them about the fact that they had a new computer.
To placate her, her parents got her a then-new Playstation 3 and a laptop that she only used to browse Facebook. Nevertheless, the years since then have seen her mature and become more grateful when she's given something, where she used to complain if it wasn't something she wanted. As our narrator put it, "Some people are slower at growing up I guess."
A Land Speed Record For Alienation
As our protagonist explained, a friend once told her that she had to be out of her home in a few months. She didn't mention any exact date until about 6 pm one night, when she finally informed her friend that she had to be gone by 1 pm the following day or the authorities would forcibly remove her and her three children. Although the moving itself wasn't so hard, the issue was that she didn't have anywhere to go. Apparently, this wasn't due to a lack of available options, but rather a lack of effort on her part to research them. Nonetheless, within the next 12 hours, our protagonist was able to get another friend the woman hadn't met to agree to house her until she found her own apartment. They now regard this as the worst idea ever.
A month later, it turned out that the woman had completely taken advantage of this other friend's generosity. She happily became a financial burden to them, somehow had a bad attitude despite how accommodating they were being, and kept lying to them. Naturally, this came as an embarrassment to our protagonist, who apologized for her. Once the woman was able to secure a new apartment, the other friends were understandably unwilling to help her move, so our protagonist took care of that because they felt responsible for putting their other friends in a rough position in the first place. While undertaking this effort, they noticed she didn't have a crib mattress for one of her daughters and offered to let her use theirs because their son had outgrown it. For some reason, this caused her to start screaming that this crib was already hers and that she has no friends that ever help her. Since she had spent the last month depending on the very friend she yelled that to, our protagonist decided that was the last straw. After standing in shock for a couple of seconds, they told her to never call her again and walked out of her apartment.
There Were Some Serious Problems With Her Plan
As our narrator explained, a girl at their high school received a used car for her 16th birthday. The fact that this car was three years old was not at all impressive to her, so she intentionally crashed it hard enough to total the vehicle.
Her thought process behind this was that if she rendered the car unusable, her parents would have to get her the new car she really wanted. However, this backfired, as they either saw through her plan or were convinced she wasn't careful enough to have her own car. Either way, she was stuck riding the bus. Indeed, there's a common theme of people finding out just what they could have appreciated after it's already gone and they made their lives harder than they ever needed to be. There's no doubt that a used car will seem perfectly fine after enough time spent on the bus.
An Unfathomable Level Of Entitlement
While our protagonist was at work, he noticed that his coworker's sister was hanging around the office. Since her brother was working late, he decided to spend some time with her at around 7 pm because her brother was still finishing up. His motivation for this was the fact that this sister was pretty and single, but he soon came to regret breaking whatever illusion of her he had. She happened to mention that her father was paying the entirety of her $100,000 college tuition, her car, and her living expenses. However, he was staggered to hear her complain that her dad was "only" promising her $500,000 as a graduation gift.
While so many people in this world would literally kill for far less than half a million dollars, she was under the impression she deserved between $750,000 and a full million and referred to her father as a "tightwad." Worse yet, her father understandably had an issue with how often she was changing her major and her seeming intent on living as a "forever student." This all incensed our protagonist so much, as he was struggling to pay off his own student debt, as well as barely staying afloat on rent and his own expenses on a fairly low salary.
Literally Saving His Life Wasn't Good Enough For Him
At 2:30 am on a Friday night, two friends witnessed a terrible car accident. A red pickup truck ran a red light and careened into a white taxi van at about 50 miles per hour without even an attempt to apply the brakes. The van spun out until it crashed into a street light. Although the friends who witnessed this were understandably in shock, they were also the only other people around, so one of them got out to render aid while the other called 911. Their instincts were right, as the van started to catch on fire under the hood. Although they could see the man inside was bleeding and badly hurt, they weren't able to get inside the vehicle because the driver's side door was badly damaged and the passenger side door was blocked by the street light. Worse yet, the fire was getting worse and starting to engulf the front of the van.
Thinking quickly, one of the friends took of his shirt and wrapped it around his hand before punching out what was left of the glass in the driver's side window. The two friends then pulled the man head-first from the van and dragged him to safety about 30 feet away. Soon after, emergency services showed up and while the fire department put the van out, the friend who broke the window gave his information to the police. Yet while the man thanked him repeatedly while the incident was still fresh, he apparently became far more ungrateful in the days to come. One week later, the good Samaritan was served papers informing him that the man was suing him for $100,000, citing physical and emotional damage. However, with the aid of a very appreciated public defender and three witnesses, the litigious man lost the case after four days in court.
It's Hard To Know What Her Problem Was
While a man was working at a chain retailer called Big W, he was checking people's bags outside of the door. At some point in his day, a little boy knocked over a promotional sign. Not wasting a moment, the man rushed over and immediately set it right.
He then smiled at the child's mother, but she didn't seem to recognize that he could have been less warm about her child had just done. Apparently, all she did was stare coldly at him and walk away. Everyone who witnessed that thought her response was rather uncalled for. Mind you, the fact that she didn't seem to have any reaction to her kid knocking over the sign in the first place was probably a clue that this was going to happen. Parents who have no issue with their kids being total nuisances can often be described that way themselves, after all.
He Was Responsible For His Own Property
When our narrator was working at a restaurant, they saw a man finish eating and go to the bathroom. Since he was finished, the bus boys figured they were in the clear to start bussing his table. When he came back, however, he started screaming for a manager. As he told it, he left his phone at the table and since it was gone he assumed the bus boys must have stolen it.
As such, he demanded that the manager search them all. The manager refused to do this, so the man called the police. However, this turned out to be disappointing for him, as all they had to say was, "Sorry sir, that's abandoned property, how do you know a customer didn't take it?" Since he didn't have an answer, he stormed off. It's hard not to sympathize with the fact that his phone was taken but wild accusations aren't going to help anyone.
She Shouldn't Be Surprised If He Doesn't Get Her Much Else
While our narrator wasn't clear on the role they initially played in this story, it's at least clear that they observed a transaction while working at an electronics store. Around Christmastime, a man came in with the intention of getting his wife a brand new laptop so she could start using the internet. Apparently, she was a late adopter of it, as this was described as happening just last Christmas. Although it took some significant deliberation, he ended up purchasing a brand new Samsung 13-inch Chromebook.
However, this apparently wasn't acceptable for his wife. A few days later, she stormed into the store with her husband in tow. This time, she dealt directly with our narrator because she demanded that they refund the laptop and supply her with a Macbook instead. The difference may not have seemed that important, but that wasn't the issue. Instead, it concerned the fact that she kept berating her husband, calling him useless and saying he didn't listen or understand her. As the employee wrote, "The phrase 'open your ears' was used repeatedly. It really boiled my blood."
What Kind Of Royal Treatment Were They Expecting?
There's nothing quite like an office that provides a free lunch. Although it's a definite boon when that offer stands every day, it's also nice even when it happens every once in a while. Indeed, that seemed to be our narrator's attitude when their workplace got lunch for everyone on one occasion. As they explained, everything was laid out and all the employees had to do was fix a plate for themselves.
Surprisingly, however, this was deemed unacceptable by more coworkers than they expected. As they put it, "Apparently, that wasn't simple enough — things got heated real quick." Why? Well, several coworkers were somehow incensed that they had to walk into the other room to get their food. They were under the impression that it should have been brought to their desks. Does someone make them breakfast in bed every morning, too? That's the only way that could make any sense.
It Seems They Were Quick To Forget How Desperate They Were
About three months after our protagonist and his wife moved into their own place, the wife's sister called her with a teary voice. She, her husband, and their daughter had lost their home in a fire a year earlier and were staying with some kind friends in the meantime. However, it that arrangement was no longer working because the couple ended up letting this family stay in their extra bedroom until they were in a better position. The stay was only supposed to last a few weeks but ended up lasting eight months. This was a pretty sweet deal for the family as well, as they stayed rent-free and only had to cover the difference in the electric bill, which amounted to $30 to $50 a month.
Not only was the couple generous in this respect, but they were putting themselves at some personal risk by letting them stay at all because it was a violation of their lease. Although they hid the family from their landlord, she eventually got wise to what was going on. Fortunately for them, she also felt sorry for the family and allowed them to spend some more time there. However, she hit her understandable limit by the eighth month and said they had to leave in a week or she'd consider it the lease violation it was. After the family left, however, they deleted the couple off Facebook and ceased all communication. When the couple got in touch to ask them what the issue was, the sister said she was angry about expecting them to cover part of the electric bill, as this meant they couldn't afford tickets to see the band A Perfect Circle. Apparently, they were also angry that the couple had their own tickets to see the band and got one for the protagonist's little sister as well. Apparently, that was enough to act like eight months of rent-free, lease-violating living was nothing.
Even Sailor Moon Herself Didn't Get This Bratty
Our protagonist described it as a mistake to get nostalgic at their uncle's house while watching an old episode of Sailor Moon, and that's because their ten-year-old cousin became instantly obsessed with her. That would normally be adorable but our narrator explained that the kid's birthday was coming up in August and they had seen her unrealistic birthday wish lists, so they figured this would end badly. Indeed, the cousin then demanded a cosplay-quality Sailor Moon Halloween costume with the red boots and hair shown here, as well as Sailor Moon's scepter. Unfortunately, the protagonist's aunt discovered that what she wanted would normally cost hundreds of dollars.
So, the aunt spent a great deal of time and painstaking effort to sew the costume herself, including the wig and leg covers. While our narrator thought that was a lot of effort for something the cousin would wear for one day, they readily admitted that the results were better than some of those expensive costumes. Unfortunately, come Halloween, the cousin made it clear she didn't agree. She cried, threw the costume on the ground, and started screaming and stomping on it. Despite fitting her exact specifications, she kept telling her mom how much she hated it and how it wasn't even close to what she wanted.
Undoubtedly, This Is The Last Time Anyone's Helping Her
Last Christmas, our protagonist went home for the holidays for the first time the family had a chance to spend together in ten years. This meant that about 20 people were coming and since the family was Sicilian, this meant a lot of food had to be made. This took place at the protagonist's mother's house and since she was stressed about how many people she'd have to accommodate, so the protagonist cooked everything they needed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
For Christmas Eve, they made a traditional fish feast and also baked cookies and cannolis. Christmas Day was even fancier, as they roasted prime rib and broiled lobster tails. That takes some serious effort to make enough of that for 20 people and that wasn't lost on the family, who thanked them profusely for their efforts. However, the mother clearly didn't share this gratitude, as she only yelled at them for leaving the kitchen messy. Since their brothers ended up cleaning that up anyway, this was a non-issue, just as it will likely be treated the next time the mother is stressed about cooking.
He Didn't Know How Good He Had It
As our protagonist explained, the previous owner of their house works at the same university as them. So when they get his mail, they made the effort to take it to his department's secretary rather than writing "not at this address" on the envelope and throwing it back into the postal system. One day saw them put two pieces of his mail in a bundle, which apparently led the previous owner to believe they waited for the second letter to arrive and delayed his mail.
While they were leaving his department's mail room, they heard him yelling at the secretary to complain that this particular mail was very important and that not giving it to him right away was "just unconscionable." At this, our protagonist made a point of coughing loud enough to draw his attention before leaving without a word. All further mail had "not at this address" written on it.
That's One Way To See If She's Capable Of Feeling Regret
As our narrator explained, they spent a long time working at the cell phone department of an electronics store. And when the iPhone 4S came out, it wasn't unusual for them to see teenagers tearfully demand changes to their family's plans or new contracts so they could get it. Even with this in mind, however, one incident took the cake. One man came in with his 14-year-old daughter who was dressed completely in flashy designer clothes. When the father told our protagonist she wanted the iPhone 4S 64GB in white. When they told the dad it would be $300 even on a brand-new three-year contract, he squirmed. It was likely even worse to hear that if something went wrong with it, he'd have to send away to an Apple store to deal with it, as their location didn't have one. Naturally, this led the employee to direct the father toward the then-new Samsung Galaxy S II, which was faster, had a more durable screen, and better internet capabilities.
However, when he called his daughter over to look at the phone, it would be an understatement to say she reacted poorly. Specifically, she screamed, "You're trying to trick my dad into getting me this loser phone so I'll be an outcast, you jerk!" While the family didn't get either phone, the way the daughter was carrying on was eventually bad enough that she was dragged out of the store by security. Better yet, her father apologized profusely for his daughter's behavior and even gave the employee $20.
One Of Life's Little Annoyances
As our protagonist explained, they used to ride the bus between their apartment and campus when they were in college. Indeed, that was how most of their peers got around. As buses often do, theirs would fill up until there were no seats left and people would need to stand. during a day where this was happening, a young woman with a very small build got on the bus while carrying a large box.
Although our protagonist was seated at the time, they decided to give their seat up to her, as they would if an elderly or disabled person got on the bus. However, it wasn't long before they felt appalled by the young woman's behavior. It wasn't just that she didn't acknowledge this person's gesture (although that didn't help) but that all she said about it was, "You only gave me your seat because you didn't want me to fall on you."
What A Heartbreaking Rejection
As our narrator explained, their family had some serious financial struggles when they were growing up. So when their younger sister was about to turn seven, the reality they faced was that they had no money for gifts. However, what their mother did have was a small amount of white satin cloth and a box of little pearl-like beads. With this, she was able to bring a heartwarming idea to life.
That idea was to hand-sew a lovely wedding dress for the sister's doll. Night after night, she would sit up and meticulously sew on these tiny beads onto the dress she had created. However, when it was finished and presented to the sister on her birthday, she was so disgusted by it that she threw it across the room. All she had to say about it was, "I don't want that, it's my old dolly." As our narrator said, "I'll never forget the heartbreak on my mother's face."
It Was Hard For It Not To Feel Karmic
When our narrator was about six years old, her mother took them to her friend's house to celebrate New Year's Eve. She also explained that while her family was fairly impoverished, the friend had significantly more money to their name. She specifically described their house as looking gorgeous and being adorned with marble counters and a piano. She also remembered the friend as graciously giving the kids at the party little presents.
As the narrator described, "Mine was a gorgeous domino doll with porcelain hands, a porcelain face, and a silk outfit." Although she cringes thinking about it now, she told the friend that she was too old for dolls. She also shudders to imagine how mortified her mother was at the time. In any case, she was banished to the play room with the other kids. There, she started to feel sickly and by the time she got home, the feeling had escalated to an awful, itchy feeling all over. That's why she's now convinced she got chicken pox because she was rude.
Cue The Curb Your Enthusiasm Theme
One might expect that receiving $500 worth of gifts at Christmas would make just about anyone happy. Well, that was likely the reaction one family expected out of the narrator's sister, who was a 24-year-old medical student at the time. Instead, her reaction couldn't go further to the extreme in the other direction. It is apparently not an exaggeration to say that she tore down the tree, kicked other people's gifts, and generally yelled and cried.
What could possibly warrant this destructive tantrum? Apparently, she hadn't seen a Nintendo Wii among her gifts. While this would obviously be an unacceptable reaction at any time, it was especially unreasonable because this Christmas occurred when Wiis were new and incredibly difficult to find due to high demand. However, she was shocked to learn that she hadn't opened all of her gifts at the time and had actually received a Wii. Apparently, our narrator even took a second seasonal job at an online gaming store to get her one. Needless to say, she curled up in embarrassment once she realized this.
What Even Happened Here?
As our narrator explained, their father was a surgeon who never turned a case down and frequently did pro bono work. They also explained that since they worked in his office to file insurance as a teenager, they got to a see a lot of what went on there. One day, a woman with no insurance came in with a lump on her breast. The lumpectomy revealed it was not anything benign, so the surgeon operated on her to avoid a mastectomy. When she came in for her follow-up, he was called to the ER.
For some reason, he was then treated to her rage and she berated him for being inconsiderate in a way she didn't specify. She yelled at him for wasting her time and told him she was going to find another doctor. To add to the embarrassment, she did this in full view of his staff and other patients. She also said she was reporting him to the medical board, who investigate every complaint, before storming off and never returning. All the report apparently said was that he was curt and rude to her, and he was investigated a month later. Although the process was costly, the surgeon never stopped donating his services, which the narrator remains endlessly proud of.
It's Amazing That Anyone Does Anything For Him
Our narrator can only describe their brother as "the worst" and it's easy to see why. The quote that rings out to them as his nadir is when he told their mother, "What have you ever done for me? Raising my daughter doesn't count." This is already a ridiculous thing to say because it means she's raising her grandchild herself when she could be enjoying her golden years, but it gets worse when it becomes clear that said daughter has a serious (and expensive) medical condition. The mother also drives an hour and a half to bring him to her house so he can help around there, but he always demands payment and gets angry when refused.
However, this isn't the extent of his behavior. Although he doesn't have a driver's license, that somehow didn't stop him from screaming at her for two hours because she wouldn't let him borrow money to buy a car. It's also worth noting that he never pays back any money he "borrows." Their grandmother bought him dentures because his teeth became so rotten that they had to be pulled out, but he got mad because she didn't spring for implants. A scammer also once sent their dad a fraudulent check for $5,000, which the bank inexplicably let him withdraw. He gave the money to his son but the bank started accusing him of fraud once the check bounced. Although the grandparents were able to come up with the money to end that issue, the brother threatened their lives when they even discussed him paying it back. He also tried to scam the narrator, but his best friend (who he also treats poorly) warned them about it and ensured that he'll never see a dime from them. He also complains that the narrator never does anything for him, but they go through the trouble of rearranging their work schedule and being faithfully on hand whenever their mother needs a babysitter for her granddaughter. But of course, anything to do with his daughter doesn't count.
It's Not Just The Sister Who's Ungrateful Here
Our protagonist describes their sister as extremely spoiled and makes it obvious that their father is her enabler. They also explained that the sister is nine years older than them, which meant she was always able to do more. They had a tough childhood in that they had to help their mother at a restaurant every day from the age of five to the age of eight. The perk of this, at least, was that the child earned a lot of tips so each day, their mom took them next door to the bank to deposit their earnings. This was how they had over $800 saved up by the time they were eight.
At that point, their sister was about to turn 17 and wanted hair styling products and makeup. However, the father concocted a scheme in which he convinced our protagonist to lend him their $800, which he would combine with $500 of his own to buy the sister a car. $1,000 paid for the car itself, while the remaining $300 were spent on seat covers, new tires, and a new stereo. However, when the sister's birthday came around, she was enraged and didn't want the car at all. As a result, she sold it for $700. Her dad got his $500 back, she was able to spend the remaining $200 on what she wanted in the first place, and our protagonist was left with nothing.
Too Bad The Kid Couldn't Time Travel
One day, our narrator spent a day home sick as a child. Their mom was there too and told them she'd rent a movie for them. Since cartoons weren't on TV as often at the time, they were excited and expected an animated movie. However, when she got home and put it on, they found it was a live-action film. This made them cry and yell in disappointment, to which the mom replied, "Fine, I'll watch it on my own!"
However, while the child pretended not to watch it, they soon found themselves becoming invested in it. Not only that, but it was the best movie they had ever seen up to that point. Not only did that day teach them to appreciate live-action movies, but it made them realize that their mom knew what she was talking about. In case the photo hasn't given it away, that movie was Back To The Future.
Hopefully, Her Daughter Grew Up To Be Better Than Her
When our protagonist was 15 years old, a girl in their driver's ed class stood up, clearly red in the face. Based on her silence, the scared look in her eyes and the fact that she had her hands to her throat, she was clearly choking. Apparently, it was on a candy. Since everyone just watched her for a moment, our protagonist decided to step up and walked over to her. They gave her the Heimlich maneuver, and she was lucky that it only took two thrusts before the candy was dislodged from her airway. The protagonist described the candy as flying ten feet, as if they were in a movie. Naturally, the scared girl started gasping and crying before thanking the protagonist for saving her life.
While they expected that to be the end of the story, they found out that it wouldn't be the next day after class. When their parents were picking them up, the girl approached with her mother. Although our protagonist expected the mother to share her own thanks, she instead started yelling, "What did you think you were doing? You aren't a doctor or a nurse! You could have broken her ribs! You're lucky I don't get a lawyer and sue your family! I still might!" Would she have preferred everyone watched her daughter die?
That Escalated Quickly
Our protagonist described once seeing a woman struggling to change her flat tire on the side of the road. He was going for a run at the time, but stopped to offer his help. Although she accepted his offer, he noticed that she backed away a significant distance. Not thinking too much about it, he went about changing her tire and ensured she would have no problem getting on her way.
Once he was finished, he extended his hand for a handshake. However, this was apparently the last thing she wanted him to do, as she replied, "Back away, I have 9-1-1 on my phone right now and all I have to do is press call." He surmised that she thought he was going to attack her but felt that was an unnecessarily harsh reaction to someone who just changed her tire for her. Nonetheless, he ran away and hasn't seen her since. In retrospect, he acknowledged that he didn't know her or what kind of trauma she may have in her history. Still, he figured that if she was that uncomfortable, she shouldn't have accepted his help in the first place.
No Wonder They Have Good Samaritan Laws
When our protagonist visited their friend's farm years ago, they described being greeted by their friend from high school, his wife, and their 16-year-old daughter. While the daughter was saddling her horse, disaster struck and the horse suddenly kicked her in the chest. The results were as brutal and terrifying as it gets, as the trauma collapsed her throat and rendered her unable to breathe.
Fortunately, our protagonist was not only able to think quickly, but showed incredible skill. In other words, they performed an emergency tracheotomy and managed to save her life. Unfortunately, that's not where the story ends. Two months later, our protagonist received a letter from a lawyer. In their words, "They changed their mind about how grateful they were and decided to sue me for leaving a scar from the tracheotomy." Regardless of the outcome, it seems likely that it was the end of their friendship.
That Sounded Like The Most Stressful Day At Work Ever
As our protagonist explained, they work at a pet store that started having a scarlet macaw (pictured) for sale a few months ago. Since these animals need their growth tracked, they were weighing her at the front of the store. As this was going on, a girl of about ten years old came in with her grandfather. Although the employee figured this meant she would know better, she soon proved otherwise by running toward the bird. This was not good at all, as the macaw was timid enough that the employee had already spent ten minutes coaxing her out of her cage to weigh her. Naturally, this meant the girl scared the macaw and she jumped off the employee's arm, luckily landing on the register counter where there was also a scale. The employee then politely asked the girl to back up because the bird was afraid. They described her as agreeing for about ten seconds, but that cooperation stopped dead when they said they'd have to take the bird back to her cage and give her a treat.
That's because the girl followed the employee the whole way and asked if she could pet the bird. Since scarlet macaws have strong enough beaks to take a finger off if they feel threatened and this bird was already afraid of her, this would be a terrible idea. Although the employee explained that that put the girl at risk of being hurt, she apparently didn't care and kept screaming, "Let me pet the bird!" This devolved into a tantrum but since the employee was being bitten by the macaw in a way that has still left them bruised, they couldn't focus on anything but getting the bird back in the cage and away from her. Meanwhile, the grandfather did nothing the entire time. Once she was back in the cage, the girl tried to stick her fingers inside, which prompted the employee to give the same warning until she finally backed up. However, she then went back to her grandfather and started yelling, "Buy me that bird" repeatedly. The employee then explained that the bird herself cost $2,000 and the cage and everything else she needed was even more. They also explained that the bird was likely going to be in their care for at least 50 years. Even so, it still took them a solid ten minutes to talk the grandfather out of buying the bird, and the girl essentially had to be pulled out of the store kicking and screaming once that finally happened. Although the employee never saw them again, the incident still shook their faith in humanity.
At Least This Lack Of Gratitude Was Easier To Understand
As our protagonist explained, a coworker who is also a good friend of his once started choking in the lunch room. He stepped up to give her the Heimlich maneuver and was relieved to report that everything went well and she started breathing again. That is, it went well until her husband showed up the next day and threatened to sue him for everything he had and beat him for touching his wife. He mentioned that our protagonist left a bruise across her ribcage.
Not intimidated, he got right in the husband's face and quietly asked if he would have preferred that she had died. He even said that if he wanted to arrange his wife's murder in a way that looks like an accident, he should let people who would otherwise interfere know ahead of time. This made the man start crying and back off. As our protagonist later learned from the coworker, her husband's rage came from his assumption that she was having an affair with her coworker and that the bruise was from rough bedroom activities.
They May Need To Read The Good Book A Little Closer
As our protagonist explained, he once did an overwhelming amount of work on an elderly couple's house for no payment because they were in no condition to do the work themselves and their property was all but falling apart. He did this most days after school and on each Sunday for about two months. All the while, he painted, cleaned, removed trees and shrubs, repaired windows, rehung doors, pulled up old carpeting, and replaced plumbing fixtures that had been critically rusted. Understandably, he was hoping to at least be thanked for all of this work since he already knew he was doing it for free. However, when the couple called him over, they told him to pray for the great things God did for them over the past two months. Obviously disappointed about a deity getting credit for his work, he left without a word.
At the time, he lived at his grandparent's house and was clearly dejected after the experience. His great uncle, who was a priest, noticed and asked what was wrong. Once the young man explained, the great uncle said, "People like that have been brainwashed from childhood to believe that all good things come directly from miracles or people acting as agents of god's will. All bad things are attributed to Satan. They feel you are the acting agent of the lord in this situation, don't take that as not being appreciated. They just don't know anything else." Although that helped the young man feel better about the situation, it also made him feel a little sad for the couple.
