This Painter’s Tape Hack Is The Secret To A Professional-Looking Paint Job

I actually love the feeling of putting a fresh coat of paint on an old wall. It is so instantly rewarding. But let us be completely honest here. The preparation process is absolutely miserable. Spending hours on your hands and knees trying to get painter tape perfectly straight along the baseboards takes all the fun out of the project. But recently I learned a brilliant little trick that completely changed how I prep my rooms.

The Problem With Painter's Tape

Normally we just unroll a piece of tape by hand and try to stick it down a few inches at a time. The problem is that the tape always twists and sticks to itself. You end up with uneven lines and frustrating little gaps where the paint will definitely bleed through. Getting a perfectly straight edge requires a lot of patience and very steady hands. It can make you lose motivation before you even open the paint can.

The secret to getting a perfectly straight line does not require buying any fancy new gadgets. You actually just need a standard paint roller frame. It sounds completely strange at first but the wire frame is the exact right size to hold a roll of tape. You just slide your roll of blue tape right onto the handle where the fluffy roller cover would normally go. It becomes an instant tape dispenser.

Before you start applying, you just need to make sure the tape is facing the right direction. You want the sticky side of the tape to be facing the wall as it unrolls from the bottom of the circle. To start, press the end of the tape right into the corner where the baseboard meets the wall. The roller handle gives you incredible control so the tape does not wander around or twist over itself.

Once you have the tape positioned, you simply walk the roller along the length of your trim. As you pull the handle back the tape unspools perfectly straight right against the edge. It feels a little bit like using those giant tape dispensers for packing shipping boxes. You can cover an entire room in just a few minutes instead of crawling around on the floor for an hour. It is honestly a total lifesaver.

Applying the tape quickly is great, but you still need to make sure the paint does not sneak underneath. After you roll the tape onto the trim, take a damp cloth or a flexible putty knife and run it firmly over the edge. This presses the sticky side deeply into the trim and creates a perfect seal. When you finally pull the tape away you will have a sharp and beautiful professional-looking line.
