This Hack Can Double The Size Of Any Ziploc Bag Instantly
I think we have all wished for bigger Ziploc bags at some point or another. Whether you are holding half a pizza or a tray of chicken breasts, sometimes the standard size just doesn’t fit. You shove in your food and try to close it, but realize that it is missing just half an inch of space. It usually ends with crushing the food or trying some sort of creative aluminum foil solution. But never fear, there is actually a really easy way to make your own giant Ziploc bags.
How The Zipper Works
It turns out that the zipper tracks on these bags are universal. If you take two bags of the same size you can actually zip them into each other rather than closing them on themselves. You just fold back the zippered edge of one bag and line up the open track of one bag with the track of the second bag. Once you slide your fingers across to seal them together, you create a much wider pouch. It basically turns two quart bags into a makeshift gallon bag in just a few seconds.
When This Trick Works Best
I find this is a lifesaver when I am marinating meat that is just a bit too long for a standard bag. It is also perfect for storing oddly shaped items like leftover baguette chunks or bulky vegetables like corn on the cob. Instead of playing Tetris with your food or wrapping it in foil that always seems to leak, you can just build a custom giant bag. It gives you that extra wiggle room exactly when you need it without forcing you to buy special supplies.
A Word About Leaks
While this trick is genius, I do want to give you a heads up that it is not completely perfect. Where the two bags meet at the corners, there is often a tiny little gap where the zippers connect. It is usually fine for solid foods or things that are just damp, but I would not recommend using this for soup or a very liquidy marinade. It works great for storage, but maybe don’t toss it loose in a backpack where it might leak or drip.
