How The Simple Foil Trick Actually Works
Static electricity builds up in the dryer because all those different fabrics are constantly rubbing together in a very dry environment. The friction creates a lot of loose electrons. But aluminum is a natural metal conductor. When you put a ball of foil in the machine it actually absorbs those stray electrical charges as the clothes tumble around. The metal safely discharges the static buildup before it can cling to your favorite heavy winter socks.
Making The Aluminum Balls
Trying this trick is ridiculously easy and takes about ten seconds. You just need to rip off three or four square sheets of regular aluminum foil. Take each sheet and simply crumple it up tightly in your hands. You want to compress it until it forms a solid ball that is roughly the size of a tennis ball. You will hear a little bit of tapping at first but the clothes muffle the sound very quickly.

The absolute best part about this trick is how long the foil actually lasts. Unlike a dryer sheet that gets thrown away after a single use, these metal balls just keep working. As they tumble around load after load they will actually compress tighter and get completely smooth and shiny. You can leave the exact same three foil balls in your dryer for several months before you finally need to replace them with fresh ones.
