The Simple Vinegar Trick Clears Stubborn Living Room Odors Overnight

I walked into my living room the other morning and was hit by a really stubborn funky smell. Between the dog sleeping on the rug and last night's garlic heavy dinner, the room just felt incredibly stale. I used to immediately light a bunch of expensive candles or spray chemical air fresheners everywhere. But I recently learned a brilliant little trick that actually removes those awful smells instead of just covering them.

Why Room Sprays Fail

When our house smells a bit weird our first instinct is usually to cover it up with something pretty. We buy those plug in warmers that smell like vanilla or ocean breezes. But those products do not actually clean the air at all. They just put a thick layer of perfume right on top of the old cooking odors. You end up with a very strange mixture of stale fish and fresh lavender. Yuck!

The absolute best way to actually get rid of a bad smell is probably sitting in your kitchen right now. Plain white vinegar is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to cleaning the air. It costs almost nothing and it does not contain any harsh artificial chemicals. It feels a little bit silly to use something we usually put in salad dressing to clean the living room, but it honestly works like magic.

Trying this trick is ridiculously easy and takes about ten seconds before you go to bed. You just need to grab a shallow bowl from the kitchen. Pour about half a cup of plain white vinegar right into the bowl. Place it somewhere safe in the living room where no one will accidentally kick it over in the dark, like on a coffee table.

It sounds crazy but that little bowl is working hard all night long while you sleep. White vinegar contains acetic acid which naturally binds with volatile molecules in the air. Most of the bad smells in our homes like smoke or pet odors are alkaline. The acid in the vinegar literally reaches out and neutralizes those stinky alkaline particles floating around the room. It physically destroys the bad odors instead of just hiding them.

I know exactly what you are thinking right now. You are worried your beautiful living room is going to smell like a giant pickle factory. When you first pour the vinegar, the smell is definitely quite strong. But as it evaporates overnight, the sharp vinegar scent completely dissipates along with all the bad household odors. When you wake up the next morning the room will just smell like absolutely nothing at all.

If you are really sensitive to the smell of the vinegar, you can easily soften it up. Just drop a fresh lemon peel or a few drops of your favorite essential oils right into the bowl. A little bit of sweet orange or lavender oil mixes beautifully with the vinegar. It makes the setup process much more pleasant and leaves behind the faintest hint of natural fragrance by the morning.
