I absolutely love the look of a sleek glass cooktop in the kitchen. But, there is a hidden danger to these smooth surfaces that I honestly didn't know about until a friend warned me. It involves something we do almost every night without thinking: where we put the lid of pots and pans while cooking.

Picture this: you are simmering rice or making a big pot of chili. You lift the glass lid to give it a stir and without thinking you set that hot steamy, glass lid down on the smooth glass surface right next to the burner. It seems like the perfect spot because it is flat and heat resistant. But this simple action can actually act like a trap that destroys your entire stove in seconds.

The real problem here is physics. When you place a hot lid face down on a smooth glass surface you trap hot air underneath it. As that air starts to cool down it contracts and pulls the lid tight against the stovetop. This creates a powerful vacuum seal that is surprisingly strong. It is not just "stuck" like a jar lid; it is bonded to the surface with incredible force that you cannot easily release.

If you try to pull that stuck lid off, the suction can be strong enough to literally rip the glass surface right off the stove or cause the lid itself to explode in your hands. You might think you are safe because your pot lids have those little steam vents in them. While that definitely helps reduce the pressure it does not completely get rid of the risk of thermal shock. Putting a scorching hot glass lid onto a cool section of the stove can still cause stress fractures due to the rapid temperature changes of the glass. It is just not a risk worth taking when a replacement cooktop costs hundreds of dollars.

Where You Should Put It Instead

The good news is that the solution is incredibly simple. Just get in the habit of placing your hot lids on a wooden cutting board or a silicone trivet. Even leaving it in a stainless steel sink is safer than the stove surface. If you are really stuck, just prop the lid slightly open on the pot handle so it doesn't form a seal by laying flat on the stove. A five dollar spoon rest is a lot cheaper than buying a whole new appliance.
