The Easiest Way To Clean A Kitchen Vent Hood (+ Why It’s Dangerous If You Don’t)
I used to think that the loud humming fan above my stove was just there to whisk away smoke and the smell of burnt toast or sautéed onions. It was one of those out of sight, out of mind areas that I ignored for way too long. But when I saw the metal grates were getting dirty above my stove, I realized I had been neglecting a pretty important part of my home. Here is how any why you should clean your kitchen vent hood.
The Fire Risk
It is a bit scary to think about, but a greasy vent hood is actually a major fire hazard. When you cook, tiny droplets of grease get sucked up into those metal filters. Over time, they harden into a thick layer of fuel. If a pan ever catches fire on the stove, those flames can jump up and ignite the grease in the vent. Keeping it clean is about more than just hygiene, it is about keeping your family safe.
Poor Air Quality
If your kitchen feels smoky even when the fan is on high, your filters are likely blocked. When the metal mesh is clogged with old oil, it cannot pull the steam and smoke out of the room. This means all that moisture and smell ends up settling on your cabinets and curtains instead. A clean vent keeps your kitchen air much fresher and prevents that sticky film from coating everything else in the room.
Boil Water
The easiest way to tackle that stubborn grease is not by scrubbing until your arms ache. Instead, find your biggest pot and fill it with water. Bring it to a rolling boil on the stove. This heat works so well because it softens the hardened grease before you even start cleaning. It is much easier to melt away the grime than it is to scrape it off with a sponge and sheer willpower.
The Magic Degreaser Mix
While the water is heating up, get your sink ready. You do not need any fancy or expensive chemicals for this job. Good old fashioned Dawn dish soap and some baking soda are all you really need. The soap is designed to break down grease, and the baking soda adds a tiny bit of grit and a chemical reaction that helps lift the oil. It is a simple, non toxic way to get the job done.
Soak It
Once the water is boiling, carefully pour it into the sink with your soap and baking soda. Submerge your greasy filters completely in the bubbly mixture. You will actually see the water start to turn brown almost immediately as the grease lifts off of the metal. Let them sit there for at least fifteen to twenty minutes. This is the perfect time to go grab a cup of coffee and let the science do the work.
Scrubbing The Grime
After the soak, most of the gunk should be loose. Take a non abrasive scrub brush or an old dish sponge and give the filters a quick scrub. You will be amazed at how easily the remaining bits slide right off. Pay close attention to the edges and corners where the grease likes to hide. If they were really bad, you might need to repeat the soak one more time, but usually, once is enough.
Wiping The Hood
While the filters are drying, take a damp cloth with a little bit of degreaser and wipe down the underside of the actual hood. Grease often splashes up onto the lightbulbs and the inner rim of the fan area. Be gentle around the fan blades and the wiring, of course. Getting rid of this surface grease ensures that your fresh filters stay clean for much longer and keeps the whole area looking bright and new.
How Often To Clean It
The best way to keep this from becoming a nightmare chore is to do it more often. If you cook a lot of fried foods or sear meat frequently, try to give your filters a quick soak once a month. It only takes about ten minutes of active work if you stay on top of it. It feels so satisfying to slide those clean, shiny filters back into place and know your kitchen is running exactly as it should.
