8 Essential Home Maintenance Tips Every Adult Should Know

When I first moved into my own place, I thought home maintenance was just about mowing the lawn or fixing a leaky faucet. It took a few expensive repair bills to realize that a house has a lot of "hidden" needs that nobody really tells you about until something goes wrong. I want to share a few uncommon things I have learned over the years. They aren't the usual chores you probably already do, but they will definitely make your life much easier.

Flush Your Water Heater

Most of us never look at our water heater until the shower goes cold. Over time, sediment and minerals build up at the bottom of the tank, which makes the heater work much harder and wear out faster. Once a year, you should drain a few gallons of water out of the valve at the bottom into a bucket. It clears out that gunk and keeps your hot water running efficiently, saving you a fortune in repairs.

Vacuum Behind The Fridge

We spend so much time cleaning the inside of the fridge that we completely forget about the coils in the back or underneath. These coils release heat to keep your food cold, but when they get covered in thick dust and pet hair, the motor has to work overtime. Giving them a quick vacuum every six months prevents the fridge from burning out early. It is a simple and easy way to save money on your monthly electric bill too.

If you have a basement, your sump pump is your best friend during a storm, but you do not want to only find out it is broken when the water is already rising. Once or twice a year, pour a few buckets of water into the pump pit to make sure it actually kicks on and clears the water out. It only takes a minute, but it gives you so much peace of mind when the heavy rain does start falling.

Clean Your Range Hood Filter

We remember to wipe down the stove, but the metal grates underneath the range hood are often neglected. They trap grease and smoke, and if they get too clogged, your kitchen will start to smell like old cooking oil. You can usually pop these filters out and run them through the dishwasher or soak them in hot, soapy water. Keeping them clear keeps your air fresh and reduces the risk of a dangerous grease fire.

Try Your Water Valves

There are little shut-off valves under your sinks and behind your toilets that you hopefully never have to use. The problem is that if they sit in one position for years, they can seize up and get stuck. Once a year, just turn them off and back on again to make sure they still move freely. If a pipe ever bursts, you will be very glad that you can actually turn the water off quickly.

It is easy to treat the attic as just a place for storing holiday decorations, but it is actually the best place to spot a roof leak early. Once a season, take a flashlight up there and look for water stains on the wood or damp insulation. Catching a tiny leak now is much cheaper than replacing a whole ceiling later. It is also a good time to make sure no little critters have decided to move in.

Clear Your Dryer Vent

Cleaning the lint trap after every load is great, but lint also sneaks past that screen and builds up inside the long vent hose leading outside. Every year, you should detach the hose from the back of the dryer and use a long brush or a vacuum to clear it out. This helps your clothes dry faster and, more importantly, prevents one of the most common causes of house fires. It is literally a total lifesaver.

A noisy, squeaky garage door isn't just annoying, it is a sign of unnecessary wear on the springs and rollers. Instead of using regular WD-40, which can actually attract more dirt, use a dedicated silicone or lithium spray on the moving parts. It makes the door glide quietly and prevents the motor from straining. It is one of those small tasks that makes your home feel much more well-cared for.
