DIY Idea: Make a Chalkboard State Map

created at: 10/25/2012

The use of chalkboard paint in design and decor projects has been seen over and over again since it became available, but I think this graphic map is particularly great example. Rather than coveringand entire wall or tabletop with the stuff, it serves as a piece of functional art: the color really helps to fill a space, looks great against white, but improves on the standard framed chalkboard by opting for a scroll approach.

This piece is from Dirsta Studio on Etsy, who will make you a custom piece for a mere $45.00, which is a good deal indeed.
But, if you’re feeling industrious, this would also make for a great weekend DIY project: just paint some duck cloth or a thin piece of luan or fiberboard with chalkboard paint, and hang on two dowel rods, 3/4-1″ thick, stained dark. Add a few eyelets and some wire or cable, then project your state’s outline (or anything you want), and trace with a paint pen.
