Your Crafts are Not Renegade Enough for the Renegade Craft Fair

Literary journal McSweeny’s has a little fun with indie craft show clichès and the sorts of imagery that continue to pop up all over the handmade scene. Still. (They’re everywhere. Really.)

It begins, “Dear Valued Crafter, We regret to inform you that your request for a booth at Tulsa’s 2011 Renegade Craft Fair has been denied. This decision was based upon the following reasons…” They proceed to list all sorts of not-indie/subversive enough, including, “It is unclear if your crocheted potholders subvert the dominant paradigm by reclaiming the culinary arts as a field in which women have historically been free to exercise authority and control. In the absence of sufficient evidence, we are forced to assume that you simply like potholders.”

It’s funny. And true. Read it.
