ManMade Video How-To: Make a Faux-Wood Deer Head Silhouette

created at: 04/19/2010

Inspired by a conversation with a close friend, who maintains that no masculine decor is complete without a) wood, and b) taxidermy, I decided I did indeed want a mounted deer head in my space. But I like making stuff, and to be honest, I'm not really keen on all the steps that go into actually making my own mounted ten-point bust...namely, killing a deer and stuffing it.

So, I improvised.

Click play above, or check out the video on YouTube.

Instead of carving up plywood, I opted to use wood grain Contact paper mounted onto hardboard. It's much less expensive, and means that those with a tools as simple as a craft knife and cardboard can make this one.

The pattern is available on the downloads page - there's a .pdf for tiling via graphics software, and a jpeg that can be printed larger through a raster blow-up site, like Block Posters.

Once you've got the wood grain Contact paper tip and the pattern, it's pretty easy math. Details in the video.

Have fun!

Great idea! I also found a template if you want to make it in 3D http://imgur.com/gcrZv

I am thinking of doing it in 3D cardboard, but I kind of want to avoid the work (my hand cramps way too easily). Your idea seems like a less painful but just as awesome alternative!

Thanks for that! I didn't have wood so I made it from thick heavy-duty foam board and covered it with a variety of graphing papers. I love it!

That looks nothing like a moose and is very obviously a deer.  I like it, good idea.

What a great idea - it's fun and clever! Will have to suggest it to the husband.

That is most certainly a deer.  Very cool.  I might do this but use some vintage floral contact paper.  (I love ironic things.)  Thanks for the tut!

@Rhonda - I see! Good thinking.

Glad you like it. Thanks for picking up on the translate-ability. That's what I was goin' for. If you try it, be sure to let us know how it turns out!

(I think that Barb is looking at the neck/shoulders of the deer and thinking it is the nose of a moose -- it looks like a deer to me!)

And what a great idea -- I especially love that you used contact paper, so that I can do it without resorting to band saws and the like.  Very cool!

@Barb - Well, when I drew it, I was going for a deer look. Whatever it is, thank goodness there's no formaldehyde involved!

Ummmm.... that's not a deer.  It's a moose!  Still, very cool.
