Television viewers in Chicago were stunned in 1987 when regular programming was suddenly interrupted by someone wearing a rubber Max Headroom mask. The bizarre figure rambled incoherently, shouted strange phrases, and performed increasingly bizarre antics before the unauthorized broadcast abruptly ended. The incident became one of the most infamous acts of broadcast signal hijacking ever recorded.
Although the interruption initially confused audiences, investigators soon determined it was the work of a skilled prankster rather than any technical malfunction. Despite an extensive investigation by federal authorities, the person responsible was never identified or caught. Even decades later, the hacker's identity, motives, and methods remain unknown, cementing the Max Headroom incident as one of television's strangest unsolved mysteries.
