These Photos Look Normal – Until You Look A Little Closer
It's hard to k now if you can trust photos online, given how many Photoshopped and AI-generated images are out there. Heck, sometimes you can't even trust an untouched photo, just because it looks so darn weird.
From doppelgangers to events that seem like they're straight-up glitches in the matrix, we've got more than a few photos that'll leave you puzzled.
Van Gogh clouds
If you're a cloud nerd, you probably know exactly what these clouds are called - but to the rest of us, they just look weird.
The skies look stormy, but these aren't dark thunderclouds, and their swoops and whorls make them look like an impressionist painting.
He's got hops
This guy didn't know he was being photographed, and he definitely didn't know that he was being photographed because it looked like he's floating.
It's amazing what a well-placed shadow can do when it comes to your perception of space.
Cloud glitch
When you're flying at altitude, above the clouds, there generally isn't much to see out the window aside from clouds and more clouds.
Here though, we see something a bit different - a long, straight break in the clouds that almost looks like the wing's shadow.
Doppelcatters
Every cat looks a little bit different, but from a distance, plenty of cats look pretty similar to others of the same breed.
The similarity here would imply that they're siblings or relatives, but apparently the outdoor cat is a total stranger.
Twinning
There are a few coincidences in here that aren't that noteworthy - for instance, the age and hat similarity.
But the closer you look, the weirder it gets. They're both wearing the exact same checkerboard design, and are both using a cane and carrying a paper bag, even if their hands are switched.
Buy a lottery ticket
This person was trying to pop a balloon using only their finger for unknown reasons, when they managed to puncture it without popping it.
This would be a really fun party trick if there was any way to reliably replicate it.
After the flood
This area was flooded for a long period of time, then got icy as the winter months wore on.
After floodwaters receded, this was the result: icy formations from the top of the flooding that have stayed attached to the surrounding trees.
Are shadows supposed to work like this?
We think of shadows as accurately mirroring the shapes that cast them, but that isn't always the case.
Whether it's refraction, an unusual light source, or actual sorcery, we're not sure - but these pixelated-looking shadows sure are fascinating.
Clipping issue
The casters on this cart look mostly normal, apart from the one in the foreground that seems to be clipping or melting into the floor.
In this case, it's an optical illusion - the photo is taken from a slightly higher step, and part of the wheel is just hidden behind the ledge, while the carpet helps everything blend in.
That isn't the sky
Depending on how you look at this photo, it looks like either a building-textured sky, or a completely see-through building.
Adjust your eyes, though, and it becomes clear that it's a glassy building that's perfectly reflecting the sky along with the other buildings in front of it.
Bus ladies
There's a level of rarity to the similarities here. Both women are wearing brightly-colored scarves, white shirts, sunglasses, and even look similar.
It's one thing to see two people wearing the same color of t-shirt, but this is on another level.
Red and green x 3
If it was Christmas, it could help explain the consistent red and green theme here, but there's so much more going on.
It even looks like all of the women in this photo share the same haircut. It's a wonder they didn't notice.
Headless cat
Cats like to rest their chins on things, which gives some hint as to what's going on here.
While it looks like a bodyless cat, it's actually sitting on a lower level and resting its head on the stoop.
Cup of green
The green area in the middle here provides a much-needed splash of color and tree cover to an otherwise barren area, but this angle makes it look so odd.
It almost looks like the green space is all contained in a cup that's been placed in the foreground.
Flying ships
Anyone who spends a lot of time in the water knows exactly what this is, and everyone else is deeply confused.
Known as fata morgana, these mirages occur when the lighting and horizon line conspire in a way to trick the eye.
Building's missing some walls
Angular, jagged designs are popular in skyscraper architecture, and that's all that's going on in this image.
While the building does in fact consist of more than just a simple facade at the top, it doesn't look that way.
Flatlands
Anyone who lives in the Great Plains will tell you just how flat the region is, and this aerial photo does indeed show the Great Plains.
Why does everything look so three-dimensional? It's just a trick of the shadows.
Two giants
These guys are standing in the shovel bucket of construction equipment and have clearly not been trained in OSHA regulations.
While they may be encountering a safety issue fairly soon, it's still cool to see how forced perspective makes them look huge.
River in the sky
It's easy to see specific shapes in the abstract formations of clouds, and here's a great example.
This is more than just one shape - it looks like an entire river system. Squint close enough and you can even see where it drains into the ocean.
Temple in the forest
A person traveling in Thailand snapped this photo of a gigantic temple emerging dramatically from the dense jungle.
There are probably a few roads that reach it, but from this angle it looks totally isolated.
This is one photo
The tombstones all reach the same uniform height with no outliers, while the grass gives way to the autumnal forest in a straight line.
Combined, this makes things look very odd - almost like this is two separate photos.
Hole in a cat
A quick look makes this look awful, but a slightly longer look shows that the grey patch is clearly part of the cat's coat.
Still, it's pretty rare to see a cat with this kind of pronounced fur pattern.
Building to sky
The ominous storm clouds are exactly the same shade of grey as this building, and the powerlines make it tough to see where the building ends and the sky begins.
If you look closely, you can see the building's outline - but that kind of ruins the fun.
Horse girl final form
Okay, so the horse's head is behind the guy, while the girl is riding the horse - either than or we're seeing an honest-to-goodness centaur.
Did this couple know they were lining up the funniest wedding photo of all time, or is this just a happy coincidence?
There's a truck in this photo
We promise you there's a truck here - but it's in a chrome design that's been polished to a mirror finish.
As a hint, just know that the truck is on the left side of the image, and the floating shapes are rearview mirrors and other accessories.
Tallest tram ever
This photo already shows an architectural oddity in a flatiron-style building, but that isn't the focal point.
What we're seeing is a two-level tram or bus that's perfectly in front of a building of the same color, making it look like one extremely tall vehicle.
No overlaps
This doodle from a Spirograph or something similar is nothing particularly complex, but it's truly mind-blowing when you take a second look.
It looks like these images all overlap, but if you zoom in, none of them actually do.
Schrodinger's Cat
How is there a cat in the box in the reflection, but not in reality? Is this the literal Schrodinger's Cat?
What we're actually seeing here is a real cat in the window and a real litterbox outside - but the reflection of the litterbox in the window has framed the cat perfectly.
Wait, how?
This looks like a pair of perfectly sculpted footprints, sitting atop the sand - but in reality they're just regular footprints.
The shadows are doing a lot of work here to make it look like these are convex, not concave.
Missing a leg
This is a standard office chair, but this photo makes it look like a magical office chair with an invisible leg.
It's just a trick of the lighting, combined with the similarly-colored carpet underneath. Look closely and you can just make out the leg.
City of giants
There's a picture-perfect panoramic viewpoint to see the skyline, and a glass barrier to keep people from falling.
At the right time of day, under the right lighting, it's possible to take a picture that captures both the skyline and the reflection of tourists.
Wardrobe malfunction
There's no doubt that the outfit of the guy on the left is stylist-approved, with the colors complementing each other.
But on TV, when sitting in an awkward position, it just looks like he opted not to wear pants.
Emu girl
Imagine getting the rare opportunity to ride on a giant flightless bird and get lined up for the perfect photo op, only to come up with this.
It's truly a one in a million shot, as the effect would be ruined if you could see even a little bit of the woman's face.
What console is this on?
This is clearly a basement, but it looks unlike any basement I've ever seen in the real world. In fact, it looks like it came from an early 3D video game.
From the muddy wall and floor textures to the color palette, this could easily be a level from the original Doom.
He skipped arm day
Pics of crowds generally just look like jumbled masses of people, but occasionally, magic can happen.
Someone is standing behind the guy on the right, wearing a similar shirt, with their hand on their hip - but thanks to the magic of forced perspective, it just looks like the guy has baby arms.
Ascendant
This woman is lying on the sand (not in the air), but her towel is laying right next to her, and is even arranged in the rough shape of what her shadow would look like.
The biggest mystery here is why she'd lay out a towel but then lie directly on the sand.
Looks good on him
Those lower-half-only mannequins are good for displaying just a pair of pants, but they can lead to some forced perspective hilarity like this.
Of course, there's also a chance that this guy just has a lot of junk in the trunk and wants to show it off.
Multi-dimensional chair
This is just a chair that's sitting astride two different surfaces, as chairs often do.
Still, there's something odd about the juxtaposition. It almost looks like the front two legs are floating in air, or like the back two legs are in another dimension.
Classic moving experience
The Redditor who posted this explained that they always had one Spider-Man mug in their kitchen before they moved houses.
After unpacking though, they found they had somehow spawned an additional Spider-Man mug from the ether.
What are the odds?
This underpass in the Netherlands is an important thoroughfare, and it's important that it stays open. Fortunately there are two sides, so traffic can still get through even if one side is blocked.
Here, though, we can see that two trucks have blocked the underpass entirely at the same time. The engineers probably didn't plan for this one.
