DIY Idea: Large Scale Outdoor-Inspired Wall Art

Sometimes, you need a little inspiration. Something to remind you to get off your phone, get outside, and soak up all that nature has to offer.

And sometimes, you simply need something to fill up that blank wall you've been ignoring.

How to: DIY Large-Scale Graphic Wall Art for Under $25!

Party decor idea: simple masking tape wall art

Food for thought: there's an actual small business behind everything you see here on ManMadeDIY (yeah, crazy, I know). And we're pretty little; just three of us: Chris (Portland), Alicia and me (Minneapolis), plus some great regular contributors, David (Redding, CA), and Justin (Los Angeles). And this summer, we passed a really big milestone: we moved into an honest-to-goodness, grown-up office space here in Minneapolis. It's not the Googleplex, by any stretch of the imagination, but to us, it's pretty amazing.

So, we wanted to we throw a big party to inaugurate our new studio. Our purpose was twofold; we wanted to share the new space

How to: Mount Posters and Art to Plywood for an Affordable Modern Look

Mounting odd-shaped posters on plywood

In my hometown there's a poster shop that makes letterpress posters for every band that plays at The Ryman Auditorium. The fun part is you never know what size the poster will be and you can count on the size being something that could only be framed in a custom size.

How to: Make a DIY Rustic State Map Wall Art from a Broken Pallet

Busted Up Pallet One of the great things about living in Northern California is the wide open spaces. There are so many great places to hike, climb, swim, and just enjoy in the expansive outdoors up here. Only a true Northern California resident can really understand how frustrating it is when people tell me how Northern California is San Francisco and then right above that is Oregon. Nope, there are hundreds of miles between SF and the border, and that expanse is my home.

How to: Print Professional-Grade Photos

Living in the age of social media as we do, it almost seems preemptively nostalgic to talk about a love for physical things, but I think we'd agree that there is beauty in the tactile. Hanging a physically framed photo shows intention and an eye toward design, so printing the best photos (and having a good frame) is key. Which is why Popular Mechanics took the time to put together this great how-to guide to help you print the best photos whether at home or online.

How to Stencil with Fire: Making Large-Scale Typographic Wood Burn Art

Oh... we know you can imagine the possibilities. Giving a hunk of hardwood that classic "branded" Western look. Creating an original poster or piece of wall art with a natural woodgrain background. A sidewalk sign or marquee for a local store or event.

There are plenty of reasons you'd want to make a wooden sign with a burnt design. Here's how to do it:

How to: Build a Map of America Wall Art from Scrap Wood

As I'm sure you know, DIY projects have a habit of starting with one intention, and occasionally becoming something else entirely. To avoid this, Michelangelo notoriously studied each piece of marble before carving it into a statue, claiming he was searching to find the secret sculpture latently hidden in the stone...

Weekend DIY Project: How to Stretch Your Own Canvas for Custom Art

created at: 08/01/2014

A stretched canvas is - poetically and literally - a blank space on which to apply original creative works: paintings, screen prints, photo transfers, spray painted stencils. They're a great way to add some custom wall art to your space, matched to the vibe of the room, it's color scheme, etc.

How to: Make 3D Papercraft Space Invaders!

created at: 03/26/2012

ManMade reader and all around good guy Jeff from Laboratory 424 in Spokane, WA wrote in to share this awesome retro-inspired papercraft project. He says,

"We like to be prepared for an alien invasion...Nerf guns loaded, extra rations of nachos packed away, and a Klingon dictionary in the back pocket. Unfortunately, such preparations tend to be forgotten in the routine of day-to-day life. As a subtle reminder, we created giant, 3-D, papercraft Space Invaders on our walls, and just so everyone is prepared, we show you how to build your own."
