How to: Make a Cruelty-Free Wooden Deer Head

created at: 04/19/2012

ManMade reader William an I have a lot in common: a love for crafting with power tools, a desire to reuse and repurpose scrap, and the goal of enjoying the trappings of classic "masculine" things like the mounted deer head, without.... you know, having to kill anything.

How to: Make a Mod, Cruelty-Free 3D Deer Head

Part of my modus operandi on ManMade is playing with those iconic, and often stereotypical, images associated with men, masculine decor, and craftsmanship. Certainly, taxidermy goes in that category, and I did my own spin with a faux bois deer head silhouette project last year.

NYU Professor Gets a Camera Implanted in the Back of His Head

Your mom may have threatened that she had eyes in the back of her head, but if Wafaa Bilal has kids, he'll be telling the truth.

The assistant NYU photography professor is about to have a camera implanted into the back of his head. The thumbnail sized camera will be thread through his skin in a similar manner to a piercing.

"The project is being commissioned by a new museum in Qatar. But the work, which would broadcast a live stream of images from the camera to museum visitors, is sparking a debate on campus over the competing values of creative expression and student privacy. [He] intends to undergo surgery in coming weeks to install the camera, according to several people familiar with the project.

For one year, Mr. Bilal's camera will take still pictures at one-minute intervals, then feed the photos to monitors at the museum."

Spudnik: A Steampunk Mr. Potato Head

Spudnik by saritamarianyc.

Sarah received a challenge at her local design/craft swap - "old toy" as a material, and "steampunk" as a theme. So, she snagged a used, old-school Mr. Potato Head and created Spudnik using found materials from around her house. Wanted Poster by saritamarianyc.

Then, Sarah created an attached 'telescope' to house a series of clever, original documents that tell the story of Comrade Spudnik.

ManMade Video How-To: Make a Faux-Wood Deer Head Silhouette

created at: 04/19/2010

Inspired by a conversation with a close friend, who maintains that no masculine decor is complete without a) wood, and b) taxidermy, I decided I did indeed want a mounted deer head in my space. But I like making stuff, and to be honest, I'm not really keen on all the steps that go into actually making my own mounted ten-point bust...namely, killing a deer and stuffing it.

So, I improvised.

Bald Artist Uses His Head as a Canvas

created at: 02/11/2010

head

Philip Levine was going bald, and rather than hide it under a combover or (swallow...) hairpiece, he embraced his new bare dome, and put some art on it.

Phil says "Button Lovin!"

From Phil's bio: "London born Philip started using his head as a canvas for creativity back in 2006 when he began to go bald. He did not want to conform to shaving his head like everyone else so started using it as an art form to express....His designs are...reaching abroad including Japan and China, and he is leading the way to becoming an original expression of creativity in the 21st century in what is becoming known as the ‘Head Art’ scene.Phil says “Tsunami”

Philip teams up with professional body painter Kat Sinclair, continuously creating a wealth of designs that have ranged from his 1000-Swarovski crystal headpiece, to homages of such artists as Roy Lichtenstein and Hokusai painted on his head. "

Phil says "Holy atomic pile, Batman!"
