The Surprisingly Fascinating History of the Bowtie

What clothing item has something in common with freelance warriors, the Rat Pack, and a famous scientist from a beloved 1990's kid's show? Yep, you're staring at it: the bow tie.

Video: A Bow Tie Teaches You How to Tie, Um, Itself

created at: 05/07/2013

The Hill-side, a Brooklyn-based necktie and pocket square company, created this sweet animated video where a bow tie teaches you how to tie itself. It's got a great old school Sesame Street-style vibe, and actually manages to be quite informative, cause there aren't any hands to get in the way.

Trust me, you want to watch this:

created at: 08/01/2012

There are those men who have completely incorporated the bow tie into their public persona, so much so that when they wear anything else, they look quite strange. Can you imagine Orville Redenbacher in a crew neck sweater, or James Bond in a polo shirt?

How to Tie a Bow Tie: A Gentleman's Guide

Unless you're Orville Redenbacher, you're more of an occasional bow tie wearer rather than a daily guy.

How to tie a bowtie - diagram

Or perhaps you've never worn one, and have no idea what you'd look like in a real, hand tied deal rather than that ribbon-y thing from the tuxedo rental place.

Either way - you likely don't remember exactly how to tie

How To: Make an Adjustable Bow Tie

created at: 02/07/2011

There are two kinds of bow ties: there's the fancy ones, that you actually need to tie every time and balance and fit perfectly in collar. And then, there's the other kind: the adjustable, pre-tied kind used in rental tuxedoes, restaurant server uniforms, Halloween costumes, and occassional forrays into Redenbacher-ness.

And unless you're a major bow tie officianado, the latter is most likely your best bet.

So, let's make one.

How to: Make a Wooden Necktie (and Bowtie!)

Cut the Wood

If you're asking, "what would I do with a handmade wooden neck- or bowtie?" we have thirty-five simple words for you. "Oh my gosh, what wouldn't you do with handmade wooden neck- or bowtie?! What are you? Do you also hate Christmas and world peace? Take your terrible attitude back to your crummy totalitarianism, you drivelspot."

Now, Make a Bowtie

Okay, we'll grant it's a legitimate concern. So, I guess a better answer is: you design it, cut and shape it from soft wood, put a string through it, then post it on Instructables.

How To: Tie a Traditional Necktie into a Bow Tie, No Cutting or Sewing Required

created at: 07/12/2010

I don't own any bow ties (heck, I hardly own any normal ties), but I'm a bit curious to know what I'd look like in one. Orville Redenbacher or Kanye? PeeWee Herman or this precious hipster?

But, again, I don't own a bow tie, and short of buying one just to experiment, I guess I'll never know.

Or, perhaps i will. Turns out, you can indeed tie a traditional, long necktie into a bow tie. My bet is that a skinnier tie made of light fabric will work best, to compensate for the extra length, but the end results look pretty sharp, no?
