Video: The Craft of Creating Handmade Scissors

Scissors are a simple tool. When the work, they work beautifully, doing exactly what you ask, as they've done since you learn how to work a pair in Kindergarten. Ernest Wright & Sons of Sheffield, England is one of the last remaining hand-manufacturer of scissors - high-quality shears crafted from the best materials and designed for a lifetime of use.

Outfitted: Father's Day Gift Ideas for Guys That Make and Build Stuff (+ Giveaway!)

created at: 05/29/2014

Oh...Father's Day. Even if you don't remember it's coming, the barrage of ads will always remind you. The ads, the ads. The ads that seem to think the only thing you should ever buy your dad is either a lawn mower or a grill or power tools. Which, on one hand, isn't totally awful, because grills and tools (and lawnmowers?) are cool, but here's the rub: tools are a personal thing. They're bought for a specific project, or a skill set, or a desire to learn a new technique.

Duluth Trading Co. gift card giveaway!
(Yup, we're also giving away FIVE $100 gift cards to Duluth Trading Co. Read on to find out how to enter!)

The History of the Pocket Knife

Most of us have a personal history of the pocket knife: that little folding multi-style you got after learning proper care in Cub Scouts, or perhaps a hand-me-down model from a relative. It went with you everywhere...well, everywhere it was appropriate for a little kid to carry a sharp object. And whether you still carry one everyday (I took nearly two decades off, but have recently moved it back into my daily carry items), there's no denying its proven utility...utility that's been appreciated for generations.

Cool Material takes a look at the complete history of the pocket knife. And by complete, I don't just mean the last few centuries of variations on a design...I'm talking millennia.

What's the Deal with the Colored Thread on the Bottom Button of Men's Shirts?

created at: 04/22/2014

If you've worn a button down shirt in, oh, the last 100 years or so, you may have noted an interesting feature: the last button hole and button thread are sewn with a different, contrasting color than the rest, particularly in solid color shirts. Or, you could be like me, and have worn button down shirts thousands of times over your existing decades, only to recently realize the thread color was different, and, once aware, started noticing it everywhere. Or perhaps you just looked down as you were reading this and learned that it is indeed true of the shirt you're wearing right now... Regardless, the question stands:

Why? Why are the bottom hole and button sewn with a different color thread?

10 Things Every Man Should Own [Fall Edition]

created at: 10/09/2013

Some of the most frequent kinds of questions ManMade receives are inquiries like, "I just graduated college and finally have a real income and I'd like to start investing in some long-lasting goods..." or "my fiancée's birthday is coming up, and I'd like to buy him something every guy should have..." In 2013, I've been giving my take on those essential items, offering a new collection of ten each season: winter, spring, summer, and fall.  Some of these you might already own, some of these you might need to upgrade to a quality version, and most of these apply to women and households too. Please let me know what you think, and what you'd add or take away in the comments below.

Outfitted: The Bike Ride - How to Look Your Best and Cycle in Style

created at: 06/13/2013
In our Outfitted series, we hand-pick the style items and practical accessories you need to look your best in a specific scenario.

When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments. Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of man. And (unlike subsequent inventions for man's convenience) the more he used it, the fitter his body became. Here, for once, was a product of man's brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others. Progress should have stopped when man invented the bicycle. - Elizabeth Howard West
