Space. It's mysterious, possibly infinite, and as captured in these photographs by NASA astronaut Don Pettit, absolutely stunning.

Stunning Star Trail Photography from the Australian Outback

Photographer Lincoln Harrison has created the most amazing long exposure star trail photographs in the Australian Outback. Taking up to fifteen hours to capture each lens, Harrison uses standard, albeit high-end, photography equipment like the "Nikon D7000, Nikon D3100, and a wide assortment of lenses. Harrison captures a large number of exposures of the foreground and stars separately. He then combines the images (sometimes hundreds of them) into amazing photographs showing the sky dominated by colorful star trails."

Paper Day, Part 3: Moravian Star

A Moravian star is a popular Advent and Christmas decoration in Germany. They originated as a geometry lesson, but eventually became adapted by the Moravian Church as a holiday symbol. [Read more here]

Geeking Out for Halloween: Star Wars Jack-O-Lanterns

created at: 10/21/2010

NPR's All Tech Considered blog takes a look at Noel Dickover, a hobbyist pumpkin carving master, who's created some amazingly detailed Star Wars themed jack-o-lanterns. "For Halloween and Star Wars geeks alike, it's truly a harmonic convergence of awesomeness."

As Noel says, "There's a difference between carving a pattern on a pumpkin, and a pumpkin sculpt. In the case of R2-D2, or the Deathstar, for instance, the pumpkin "is" the object, not just a portrait. So in thinking about carving R2-D2, I absolutely had to have a fairly tall, completely cylindrical looking pumpkin. I found one that weighed in at right around 40 lbs. Without this, there's no way I could have gotten the detail I was looking for."

How To: Make a Stormtrooper Helmet from a Milk Jug

You know those moments when you just look at an object, and you think, "oh my gosh! That totally looks like a _________." It could be something you've never seen before, the form of which immediately stands out to you. Or, it could be something you've seen and used all your life.

Lindsey had one of those moments with a standard one-gallon milk carton. The realization? Stormtrooper helmet. Of course!

A Star Trek Home: Boldy Decorate Where No Man Has Gone Before

Tony Alleyne, trasnporter console, star trek

I'd seen Tony Alleyne's home - which he's transformed into a replica of the Starship Enterprise - on at least ten home decor/design blogs, and had always ignored it. I don't know much about Star Trek: The Next Generation (read: Anything besides the fact that the dude from Reading Rainbow is on it and has no eyes, and that I think Whoopi Goldberg had something to do with it...), so I figured I couldn't really appreciate the good work, since I have no idea how it compares.

But, this week, I saw it again, and I've still never seen Star Trek TNG (check out my in-the-know abbreviation. I also learned about DS9!), and I think it's super cool.

Star Wars Pancake Molds

Star Wars™ Pancake Molds

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, some genius realized you can make reusable, non-stick pancake molds and put a face on those flapjacks. And then, just a bit ago, someone decided, as clever-minded designers often do, to make a Star Wars version, complete with Yoda, Darth Vader, and a stormtrooper.

created at: 06/29/2010

"Our Star Wars molds couldn’t be easier to use. Just place them with their handles up on a preheated griddle then pour in your batter. After the first side has set, remove the molds and flip the pancakes. Serve a stack drenched in your favorite syrup – and let the adventures begin."

Has anyone had success with pancake molds

A Collection of Crafts to Celebrate Official "Star Wars Day"

Star_Wars_Day_Crafts_Ewok_Dog.jpgI've been honest in the past about my lack of Star Wars experience in the past, and a few have said to me, "How can you post Star Wars crafts if you've never seen the movies?" "Well," I usually say, "I post about houses I've never been in, designs and artwork I've only seen pictures of, and link to how-tos I've never followed myself."

Retorts aside, last night, I watched "A New Hope" for the first time. (Rather, finished it for the first time...I'd seen the first half hour once or twice). And, wouldn't you know it, TODAY, May 4, is official Star Wars Day - "May the Fourth Be With You"...get it?

How To: R2D2 Light from a $10 IKEA Lamp

DIY R2D2 Lamp from $10 IKEA lamp

Nylanan is currently building a full scale R2D2 from scratch, and thus has lots of R2 on the brain. So, when he noticed the $8.99 TERTIAL work lamp while walking through IKEA, he couldn't help notice the similarities. So, with a bit of blue vinyl, he took a break on his robo-build and created this great, inexpensive R2D2 lamp.

As he notes, "The great thing about R2 is that he has such a an iconic look that you really only have to capture a few bits and pieces to make him look right: the main eye, the stripes and the top sections."

The Millenium Falcon Bed: Sleeping Tight in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...

It's going to come out sooner or later, so I might as well just get it out of the way.

I've never seen Star Wars.

It's not that I'm culturally illiterate, I just haven't managed to get my hands on a copy of any of the films yet. It feels wierd to rent them from the video store (kinda like owning It's a Wonderful Life), and I'm afraid to watch it with most of my superfan friends, cause I'm a bit worried I won't do it properly...or that I might fall asleep.

Still, I do know a bit about the franchise - I know who Lando Calrissian is, and I know that Boba Fett has become this mysterious cult character adored for his lack of screen time
