When looking for a new apartment, it's hard not to notice the improvements (on large and small scale) needed prior to moving in. While your landlord may be taking care of new carpeting, cleaning the central air vents, and fresh paint on the walls, there may be some additional improvements on your list that you can take care of on your own. Here are five quick improvements you can check off your list before the big move.
1) Slap on Those Switch Plates
With no furniture in your new apartment, it’s way easier to spot any and all inconsistencies around electrical outlets.
Ever wish there were a better way to lay claim to the books in your library than just scribbling your name on the inside cover? Which, let's admit it, ends up being so non-descript that it doesn't even register to loanee, who will inevitably just shelve the book as his own.
What you need is an custom Ex Libris stamp they'll forever recognize. Like, with a bear on it.
Like most people, my family spends a lot of time in the kitchen. It’s where we start our day (coffee, papers, kids), and where we inevitably land every evening for dinner. Despite its small size and builder-grade cabinetry and appliances, it’s a space that works for us. But my wife and I have long been looking for simple kitchen upgrades to bring more personality into the space, and allow us to really expand on our passion for cooking.
We’ve grown tired of cooking on our wonky electric range, and we’re constantly exasperated by our tiny, hard-to-keep-organized refrigerator. After enjoying a meal with friends in their very functional kitchen, we decided that the time was nigh - we were ready to do a mini overhaul.
They say a fine wine only gets better as it ages. Guess what? So do you. Being a young adult is awesome. It's all about setting yourself up for success, and forming yourself into the kind of man you want to be.
But, at some point, you actually get to live out those commitments and really embrace the kind of grown-up you want to be. Whoever said "never trust anybody over thirty" must have never gotten there, cause being in your thirties, if you do it right, is freaking awesome.
There's a certain cool factor that comes from a grungy, well-worn photograph. Last year, the tintype made a short resurgence when photographer, Victoria Will shot celebrities at the Sundance Film Festival with an antique tintype camera. I have always wanted to have a tintype photo of my wife and I, but unfortunately, I don't own such a contraption. So we're going to have to make do with technology that costs ten times more than the tintype camera ever did. Oh the irony!
This modern, modular garden project works well in any space. Because it uses wood containers, you don't have to worry about the quality of your existing soil, and they can sit on any surface: grass, concrete, gravel or even a wooden deck. The garden's vertical orientation lets you grow a whole bunch of veggies, herbs, and flowers in a tiny footprint.
There's nothing like being able to walk out your own door and grab a big handful of fresh vegetables and herbs and make a tasty meal. This vertical planter project allows you to grow a lot of produce in a small amount of space, so there's always a fresh batch of lettuce or mint ready to go when you need it.

They say a dog is a man's best friend. Like most pet owners, I have an unhealthy fondness for my hound, a full-blooded beagle. Is there anything better than a man and his dog? How about a cool, rustic-framed print of said dog? To do it, I dusted off my Art 101 skills and tried my hand again at block printing. Here's how I used Photoshop Elements 13 to turn my photo of Bailey into a timeless piece of art.

With age comes maturity, and usually a little wisdom. By the time a man hits thirty, that wisdom should be apparent in the company he keeps, the deeds he does, and the things he owns. ManMade advocates for those that are built to last; we oppose the culture of disposability. Here's our list of things worth owning.

I use a lot of sharp things in my projects ... and I have the scars on my hands to prove it. See, most of my creative work involves taking some raw material, cutting it, shaping it, and then putting it in relation to other cut and shaped materials. A piece of hardwood through the table saw, paper cut by scissors, a carrot chopped by a chef's knife, a linoleum carving block sliced away for printmaking. Each uses different techniques, but are all, at their core, intentional material manipulation.

Football is back in season. For some of us, it's the all-consuming, stark-raving crazy best time of the year. For others, it's time to make some random fantasy league picks and hope we don't get embarrassed too badly.
But whether you're a rabid fan or rueful bystander, I think everyone can agree on the merits of tailgating. Eating good food, getting outdoors, and hanging out with friends should be on every guy's list of things to do this weekend.
Recently, AT&T got in touch with us to let us know about their #Techgating tour. They're stopping at select games around the country with the AT&T Fan Zone Tour Truck, which is decked out with
In 1980, the U.S. men's ice hockey team was made up of a collection of amateur and collegiate athletes hardly known for its hockey prowess in any region south of the Great Lakes. In a medal round match against the Soviet Union - an ice hockey powerhouse and then Cold War-era antagonist - the U.S. team managed to beat the CCCP in what became known as the "Miracle on Ice," and the moment that Sports Illustrated dubbed the Top Sports Moment of the entire 20th century.
Even with all the commercialism, the chaos, and the over-sentimentality, this season really is the most wonderful time of the year. The holidays provide an opportunity to get intentional - to reach out to others, to make gifts and special food, to wish "Season's Greetings" to a stranger that you'd have otherwise ignored.
