The Process: Crafting a High End Kitchen Knife from Scratch

Murray Carter is the 17th generation Yoshimoto bladesmith. He was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but and traveled to Japan when he was eighteen, inspired by a karate competition. There, he encountered the Japanese bladesmith tradition, and he stayed in Japan for half his life and apprenticed under a Japanese bladesmith for six years.

Murray now works at his own shop just outside Portland, Oregon, and the Tristan Stoch and the Cineastas film crew visited his workspace to create this fascinating portrait of what actually goes into forging and shaping this precision tools by hand.

18 Clever Uses of the New Facebook Timeline

A few weeks ago, Facebook announced their new "Timeline." The company explained it like this: "The original Profile was sort of like the last five minutes of your life. The updated Proile from 2008 extended that to show what was sort of like the last 15 minutes or your life. The new Profile unveiled today is “the rest,” Zuckerberg noted. He calls this feature Timeline. "It’s the heart of your Facebook experience, completely rethought from the ground up,” Zuckerberg says, noting that they’ve been working on it all year. “Timeline is the story of your life.”

Several technology gifted souls have already embraced the new profile design to great effect.

A few months ago,  Facebook got a makeover, allowing more and bigger photos to appear on the Facebook page (you know, so you can see how badly your high school friends have aged immediately, instead of having to click though).

Doctor Popular, aka Doc Pop, is a true renaissance man here in the Bay Area. As a person with a lot of interests myself, I'm always excited to learn about other dabblers who have a laundry list of skills and pursuits. The good Doctor describes himself as a "game designer, illustrator, tailor, rapper, and super nerd." Excellent. I've also met the man and can attest to his niceness and enthusiasm about the yo-yo lifestyle.
