created at: 04/17/2013

Each Wednesday, I post some of my favorite can't-miss links, images, and otherwise mindblowing goodies from across the web.

2011 saw some major eruptions by some of the world's biggest active volcanoes. The Atlantic features some amazing photographs capturing the steam, ash, toxic gases, and lava.

The 100 Best Songs of 2011

Okay... I know. Anytime you start making "best of" lists, you're tredding into dangerous territories. No single list could possibly cover the breadth of music releases, critics are always biased, etc, etc.

Got it. But, if there's anyone who you can actually trust to share, explore, and digest the full spectrum of a year's releases, it's the people that made this list:

The 45 Most Powerful Images of 2011

created at: 12/15/2011

Photography blog FStoppers features some seriously incredible photographs from over the last calendar year. I know a whole lot happens every year, but it seems that 2011 was particularly packed with political events, natural disasters, and major news stories.

Free Music: ManMade's 2011 Modern Rock Holiday Mixtape

created at: 12/14/2011

Dear friends -

Last holiday season (ManMade's first Christmas!), I created a mix of some of my favorite "alternative" Christmas songs, and it was a decidely huge hit with readers. The emails asking for another this year began in October, so seeing as it's the season for giving, my gift to you: the ManMade 2011 Modern Rock Holiday Mixtape!

Over the past few years, I've sorta developed an obsessive hobby of trying to find non-Andy Williams or Nat King Cole Christmas songs to soundtrack the kind of holiday that I've come to love as an adult.

created at: 12/14/2011To show support for "everyone's (except those with Nielsen boxes) favorite show," James Montalbano reworked the introductory credits of Community, which is struggling to stay on the air, in the style of two other great NBC comedies, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation.created at: 12/14/2011

The quality of work here is really quite stunning. Watch these videos:

Rapper Ice Cube Celebrates Charles and Ray Eames

You'll likely see this all over the art and design blogosphere in the next few days, but it's too cool not to share. Apparently, before becoming an emcee and actor, Ice Cube studied architectural drafting, and it turns out, he's a big fan of mid-century super couple Ray and Charles Eames.

You simply gotta check out the video below:

Past Presidents Kick Butt in Epically Patriotic Art

Sometimes, a dollar bill isn't enough.

Artist Jason Hauser decided to take a different approach to honor the founding fathers and other heroes of U.S. history...by depicting them in various stages of total badassery.

Teddy Roosevelt battles bigfoot, George Washington becomes a zombie hunter, and Abe Lincoln touts the Emancipation Proclamation atop a grizzly bear...

Incredible Collages of Movie Poster Cliches

French pop culture blogger Christophe Courtois has seen a lot of movie posters. So many, in fact, that he began to notice a few trends.

No, not just the over use of Trajan, but the fact that a lot of them are, well, exactly the same...

Most interesting, Courtois notes the similiarities in types of movies, like the abundance of yellow in art house cinema:

Pop Culture-Inspired Pencil Sets

created at: 11/22/2011

(Classic Rap pencil set - $6.00)

These playful pencil sets created by One Up Designs made me laugh. The sayings on the side of each pencil, which are inspired by popular culture, are actually quite subtle. But those who spot "The Dude abides"on the side of your pencil will definitely get a kick out of it.

A Poster Campaign to Help Save NBC's "Community"

I hadn't heard the news, but apparently NBC has shelved its current most creative and original series, Community. It hasn't been cancelled, but new episodes are not being produced, and it's time slot will be filled by the returning 30 Rock. And yes, Whitney is still airing, albeit not on Thursdays.

To show support for the inventive series, Vulture has created an old fashion poster campaign.

Moustair - Where Men Meets Mustaches Meets Hair Meets Mustaches...

I stumbled across Mustair early last week, and thought, "Yep, I love it when people come up with things that you think should already exist, but don't" and though I subscribed, imagined I wouldn't keep up with it frequently. But, I have... cause it's really, really funny, and keeps getting better.

Awesome "Retro Modern" Superhero Illustrations

French artist and illustrator Grégoire Guillemin created these incredible "retro modern" superhero posters, taking clear influence from Bauhaus and Art Deco movements and 1930s advertising. He says, "As the name suggests, this is an "exercise in style" or rather a confrontation between two cultures: a personal culture forged during my childhood through comics books (among others things) and a professional culture nourished with the beginning of advertising."

When you've created a quadruple album in which all four records are meant to be played on four stereos simultaenously, created an original musical film entitled Christmas on Mars, and become one of most inventive and interactive touring bands (while creating a crazy, sci-fi'd Art Deco home), what's left?

Michael Bayhem: The Correlation Between Explosions and Moneymaking

created at: 11/04/2011

Every summer, Michael Bay makes a new incredibly expensive movie, full of fire and always terribly reviewed. And yet, the studios still let the guy keep making them, 'cause apparently folks still go see 'em, and their, despite their $200,000,000 budgets (yes, that's two hundred million dollars), they still make money. Lots of money.

And, interestingly enough, it seems that their profit continues to be related to, well, how many explosions there are.
