How to: Make Mini Office Supply Book Covers for Matchbooks (Free Download)

created at: 02/14/2011

I'll admit it; I have a particular penchant for miniatures. Not small things, but tiny versions of normal-sized stuff. Generally, I like things that play with scale, I like the "how do they do that?" aspect, and, c'mon, mini things are adorable!

So, I love these super cool tiny books, which made from matchbooks and actually serve as office supply storage, are a quick DIY project who's reward just keeps on giving. Put these on your desk, and there's no way you won't be inspired.

Dollargami : $1 Paper Art

created at: 02/09/2011

One Christmas (maybe 1990 or '91?), I got a 'cool things for kids to do' book, and spent several of the awkward hours at the uncomfortable side of the family's gathering trying to follow the step-by-step directions and perfecting the dollar bill ring.

These dollar bill origami projects are a lot cooler than that.

How To: Make a Beard Box

created at: 01/31/2011

I decided to make all of my Christmas gifts last year. It’s really cool and personal, and, of course, saves money.

The only hole in my plan was my dad. He doesn’t do all of those traditional dad-ish things that you find in gift guides: He doesn’t hunt or fish or watch sports or even wear ties. To make things much harder, he’s an amazing craftsman and the best designer that I know, so I put off making a decision for a long time. (You know, fiddle-dee-dee and all.) One week before Christmas, I sat down to brainstorm. While browsing ManMade, I came across the Hierarchy of Beards. My dad has an awesome beard; I would probably classify it as a kitchen shelf.

I’ve never seen him without it, and I don’t really want to. I decided to pay homage to the greatness of his beard this Christmas, and create a bearded box to store all his goodies.

Behind-the-Scenes: The ManMade Office Gets a Makeover

created at: 01/28/2011

Six months ago, I left my then-current career to pursue creative work full-time. In doing so, I realized I probably needed an actual space beyond my couch to stay organized, and keep track of various projects, etc. So, for the last few months, I gave the spare bedroom in my house a 100% overhaul to become a functional craft studio and office.

Like a tour? Of course! Welcome.

How to Make DIY Typographic Mugs

created at: 01/05/2011

I'm thankful I don't have a caffeine addiction. I really like coffee, and tea, (and, unfortunately, Coca Cola, but I try to avoid it the best I can), but promised myself I would never get in the habit of it defining my morning.

But, I get it, especially in January. A warm, complex beverage to wrap your hands around, and savor. And I think it'd be even better enjoyed in a handmade, customized mug.

So, I kinda love this project by Design Mom. Like, love it a lot. Like, wish I'd known about those porcelain markers so I coulda come up with it myself. Cause if I had, this is exactly what I'd make with one.

How To: Make DIY Shrinky Dinks

created at: 01/04/2011

I know it sounds weird, but over the holidays, I needed to use Shrinky Dinks for one of my gifts. See, I got my sweetheart a vacation, but you can't really wrap that up and put it under the tree. Plus, even if I put the travel arrangements in a box, that's only one gift, and not how I do things.

So, I came up with a series of clues and hints to slowly unveil what the ultimate present would be. Anyway, for one of them, I needed to make a Shrinky Dink.

I actually know how to make Shrinky Dinks, cause my science teacher parents always made us make our own instead of getting the cool California Raisin or Thundercats ones from the store. Which was pretty annoying when I was a kid, but kinda sweet now.

Street artist Agata Olek gave Wall St. a present for Christmas: he crocheted a custom yarn shell for its Charging Bull sculpture.  "The iconic Charging Bull sculpture was itself an illegal installation when Arturo Di Modica initially installed it in front of Wall Street in 1989 following the crash of '87."

How to Make 3D Paper Snowflakes

created at: 12/10/2010

Three or four years ago, these 3D paper snowflakes exploded all over the how-to and home decor blogosphere, and they've been an essential part of my holiday season ever since. I love the methodical tape slicing and paper cutting that perfectly matches a viewing of Christmas Vacation or Scrooged. This year, there's a total of sixteen hanging all over my home, and in case you haven't seen this how-to somewhere, I thought I'd share.
