Men in Tights: How Do You Feel about Mantyhose?

created at: 03/21/2012

Mantyhose. They're pantyhose for men. The concept and obvious pun first crossed my path on an episode of Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, in which rapper and actor Ice T was given a multiple-choice quiz in which "mantyhose" was the correct answer. And, as far as listening to famous people discovering mantyhose for the first time, Ice T is about as interesting as you can get.

And then, Time magazine reported that they're not only a very real thing, but have a growing niche market.

'Mantyhose have been popular in Europe – that bastion of progressive, gender-neutral fashion – for years, but have only recently gained traction in the U.S... When we started our online shop we noticed that a lot of tights sized medium-large were being purchased by men…so I did a search on the Internet and discovered there is a cult following for mantyhose.' Indeed, there is an online community of mantyhose enthusiasts, and many congregate at the site Its founder, Chan Kraemer, writes in a post, 'We believe that pantyhose for men can be an everyday clothing item, and that it can be fashionable as well.'

"Most men buying into the trend wear their tights much as you would wear long johns – beneath the pants, as an extra layer. However, those with sartorial boldness might try pairing them with shorts."

So, huh. I guess I need to say that I'm okay with men and women and children wearing absolutely whatever they please, unless it's harmful to another person. But, I'm just having a hard time figuring out when there might ever be an opportunity where these would even be an option for me.

The way I understand it, women wear pantyhose for three-ish reasons:

1) to keep there legs covered and warm when wearing skirts, dresses, or thin pants

2) to give a uniform look to their legs and skin, or to appear more professional/dressed-up

3) as a style choice, usually involving non-"nude" colors or patterns

Of the three, only the third applies to me...but I'm 99% sure that's not a decision I'd make. If I need long underwear, I'll wear long underwear. If I'm wearing shorts, then it's cause I'm hot or exercising, and definitely don't need more gear on.

But...I'm curious what you think, good women and men. Please post your thoughts in the comments below.

I love wearing pantyhose. They feel good under my pants and keep you warm when it's 20 below outside. They also look good as well. I wish more men would come out in the open about wearing them.

I love wearing tights. Soooo comfortable. At Christmas, on vacation, I wore them with shorts in SF. Wore camo style and argyll and got many compliments.

As someone who actually wears tights under cutoff denim shorts as casual wear - e.g., walking the dog or going to the gas station - I can say that it's at least as much about comfort as it is about style. To me, men's thermal underwear is excessively baggy and ugly. Also, I wear shorts late into fall and early in spring. Once it gets hot, of course the tights come off.

There are only two ways for men to wear tights - under pants and under shorts - unless they're going to make the extra leap of wearing a kilt/skirt. Kilts and high-quality tights are very comfortable. More men ought to at least try them.

I'm a guy, and I love wearing GOOD hosiery because I like how they feel on my legs. It's a sensual thing. I also happen to like how they look on me.  I think that all of this talk about the "utility" of tights / pantyhose is just hogwash - it's men trying to justify their interest in an experience that they think should be relegated to the women.  Man up , men. If it feels good, just do it.  http//

P.S. My comment was quite damning, but I'd be open to wearing them if I could find non-falling down, comfortable, non-rippy ones. MAYBE.

As a chick, I hate pantyhose, I even hate the word, but I really don't like wearing them. Occasionally I will wear tights, but overall they suck. They slowly fall down, making walking awkward at best. I much prefer long socks or long underwear or hell, even leggings as long underwear. Pantyhose are the devil. I'm a chick and I hate them, but if the menfolk want to take them they are MORE than welcome to them.

Hi Rick,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

I'm also a road cyclist, and am curious how these compare to other cold-weather exercise leggings, etc. Are they made of course nylon and elastic, like standard pantyhose, or more like synthetic fibers, like running tights?

What do you think of having the feet attached? A benefit? Better overall coverage?

Im a guy and Ive been wearing them for a couple of years (only thick black opaques). I started wearing them under my pants on my road bike. Long johns are way to hot under pants if I rock up at my destination and want to not cook. This is where tights are handy as they keep me warm on the road then im comfortable after I arrive where Im going.

I started to realise how warm and comfortable they are wearing them with shorts. I prefer to wear shorts and well this filled the gap during winter. Bring it on I recon they are not feminine, guys have been jogging in them for years and now all they are doing is adding feet...
